The Good Shepherd

Angelina Jolie, John Turturro, Matt Damon, Robert De Niro, William Hurt

Edward Wilson understands the value of secrecy--discretion and commitment to honor have been embedded in him since childhood. As an eager, optimistic student at Yale, he is recruited to join the secre...( read more  read more... )t society Skull and Bones, a brotherhood and breeding ground for future world leaders. Wilson's acute mind, spotless reputation and sincere belief in American values render him a prime candidate for a career in intelligence, and he is soon recruited to work for the OSS (the precursor to the CIA) during WWII. As one of the covert founders of the CIA, working in the heart of an organization where duplicity is required and nothing is taken at face value, Edward's idealism is steadily eroded by a growing suspicious nature, reflective of a world settling into the long paranoia of the Cold War. As his methods are adopted as standard operating procedure, Wilson develops into one of the Agency's veteran operatives, all the while combating his KGB counterpart. However, his steely dedication to his country comes at an ever-increasing price. Not even his wife Clover or his beloved son can divert Wilson from a path that will force him to sacrifice everything in pursuit of this job.

Difficult to get through, slow as a speeding snail, but fascinating in its scope and plot, directing and acting were excellent.

I'm sure that the cast put their all into this movie (so star-studded!) The camera work is inspiring. The story would have been intriguing too had I known what the hell was going on.

At almost 3 hours, this period film about the beginnings of the CIA is an ambitious, but ultimately tedious spy drama. There are moments where the film shows signs of turning into a first rate thriller. It ultimately remains a character study of a very stiff and unemotional man...( read more), inspired by the true-life story of CIA founder James J. Angleton. Intelligent and realistic, but not particularly exciting.

Ambitious tale of espionage across decades of American history which is held together by a bravely understated performance from Damon. Fine support from Jolie and Baldwin help the long run time fly by but the dour nature of the lead character takes the shine off somewhat.

I hated that this film it was so bad for the sole reason of not knowing what was going on. With a star line up of Matt Damon, Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci, Alec Baldwin and Angelina Jolie you would think this would have been exhilarating but it was so hard to follow that I didn't wo...( read more)n't it to end thinking maybe it will explain but it never did. Also I found out Im not the only one who thought it to be confusing too.
