Without a doubt the best of the three, everything is perfect but it's Eli Wallach who steals the show as far as I'm concerned. Brilliant!

Sergio Leone during his three decade career crafted five confirmed masterpieces out of the seven films he made total. His films are always profound, personal and meditative on the subject. The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly is perhaps his greatest achievement along with Once Upon A Time In America and Once Upon A Time In The West. If one is familiar with the western genre, they would recognize a number of signature camera techniques and music. Leone's film singlehandedly changed the way people viewed the western. The gun by the hand camera shot, the juxtaposed sweeping cinematography and sudden closeups. The iconic film score is a piece of music everyone has heard at one point in their lives even if they do not recognize it as being from The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly.

It is poetic in every sense of the word. Leone's clear passion for the subject shines through in the lovingly crafted sets including an absolutely stunning Civil War sequence which is almost a film in itself. The plot is basically a simple treasure hunt which grows into a violent opera of betrayal, revenge, and greed. Clint Eastwood and Eli Wallach share the knowledge of the whereabouts of $200,000 in Civil War blood money. They are partners and friends but they harbor a love/hate relationship and both men would be willing to betray and kill the other if it meant a profit. As a dying Confederate soldier confesses the location of the treasure, through a set of circumstances which I will not reveal, Eastwood (The Good) is given the name of the grave in which the loot is buried and Wallach (The Ugly) finds out where the cemetery is and as such they rely upon each other to be successful in the search. When Lee Van Cleef (The Bad), a ruthless killer and gun for hire, is able to find out where the graveyard containing the treasure is, it turns into a brutal race between the men to reach the treasure.

It stunningly mixes realism and the mythology of the west into an epic that will stand the test of time for years to come and takes its place among classics such as The Godfather and Raging Bull as one of the greatest films of all time.

The third of the Man With No Name trilogy, though Eastwood is called Blondie in this picture. This spaghetti western doesn't have as much of a variety of international actors in the cast compared to A Fistful of Dollars. In fact, the movie is so focused on the good guy (Eastwoo...( read more)d), the bad guy (Cleef), and the ugly guy (Wallach) that all the other actors are lucky to have more than two lines in one scene. There aren't really any other major characters. And the three title characters are all Americans. The sparse dialog, the panoramas, the music, the suspense all make for an enjoyable movie experience. The DVD I have has the film extended to play like the original Italian premiere instead of with a half hour of footage cut out for the slimmer American run. I don't know exactly what footage was put back in, but it all flowed very well. This story even includes the theme of the futility of war through showing all the lives lost in the American Civil War. Yet, it is still a shoot-em-up western where a good number of people die by the anti-heroes hand. Anyways, there are some epic battle scenes, but all the fighting just gets in the way of Eastwood, Wallach, and Cleef fighting amongst themselves to be the first one to find a buried treasure.

Eastwood has good chemistry with Wallach! They share most of the movie. I loved Eli Wallach's character Tuco in this movie! He's so funny, energetic, resourceful, dirty, and sympathetic (you care for him more because of a couple of the scenes that I'm guessing were added back in from Leone's Italian cut).

    Review:
All i got to say is:oh my god, what a movie. This is most spectacular, brilliant and influential western movie of all time with non-stop action and legendary perfomances.I was never a huge fan of westerns(just my father)but after i watched The Good,The Bad and the Ugly,i got hooked to Spaghetti Westerns, the genre created by the legendary Sergio Leone. The unique style and visual of this movie influenced a lot of directors including Robert Rodriguez with Desperado and Quentin Tarantino with Kill Bill vol 1 and 2 but can never be equal to the master that is Leone.

Clint Eastwood was absolutely amazing in the movie. He took once again his immortal role of Blondie, the most relentess and toughest gunfighter of the West. This is the role that made Eastwood the living legend that he is today, inspiring a lot of bad muthas in the silver screen.Nothing will beat Eastwood´s classic image with the hat, the cigar in the mouth and the gun in hand. Now that´s a badass in my opinion.I loved Lee Van Cleef in the movie as Angel Eyes.I first met him in Escape from New York but he´s a constant presence in the westerns. He will be always remembered as the West´s most toughest villain.

Sergio Leone is one hell of a director. He has such a unique style of filmmaking which is amazing. He´s the Kubrick of westerns in my opinion. The standoff scene between Blondie,Tuco and Angel Eyes is one of the best scenes of the film and also of cinematic history. That scene is so intense and spetacular and with Ennio Morricone´s amazing score makes it even more amazing. This movie grabed a lot and too bad they don´t make this kind of movies anymore. The Good The Bad and Ugly is the definitve western movie of all time and a landmark of cinematic history just like Raiders of Lost Ark for the adventure movies and Die Hard for the action movies.

This is no doubt of mind one of my favorite movies ever and i hope to see more Spaghetti westerns just as spectacular as this amazing masterpiece. The ultimate bad ass movie ever made by the master Sergio Leone.

"Il Buono, Il Brutto, Il Cattivo" (The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly) is a spaghetti Western film directed by Sergio Leone and released in 1966. (Spaghetti western is a term coined for films made and produced by Italian companies, especially having genres like those of American wes...( read more)terns.) The film stars the then rising Clint Eastwood as "Blondie" (The Good) as the silent yet sometimes cunningly naughty bounty hunter in search for a hidden treasure in the cemetery for departed soldiers during the war. Included in the title role are Lee Van Cleef as the man they call "Angel Eyes" (The Bad) who in turn became Blondie's rival for the treasure along with Eli Wallach as Tuco (The Ugly), an outlaw and a semi-mad robber.

The story revolves around the lives of three great gunslingers Blondie, Angel Eyes, and Tuco and their search for a big amount of treasure hidden somewhere at the deserted nearly becoming ghostly town during the war.

Main characters were introduced separately by a series of scenes. Presenting first was Tuco robbing an establishment, then escaping the authority by breaking a glass window then running fast. Next was Angel Eyes going to a home of an old guy and having him slain because of business. Finally was Blondie in his handsome and mysterious looks, catching the runaway Tuco and having him put to jail for the reward of money.

Blondie and Tuco had had a great friendship since they are ought to find the treasure. They each had information not known to the other. In short, even if they hated each other, they needed to be each other's partner. Quite hilarious. Making things worse for both of them is Angel Eyes, because he didn't want to share the money to any partner. When he learned that Tuco and Blondie had all the information for the treasure, he captured them and pushed them to talk. But it seemed that both Blondie and Tuco were very skilled gunslingers. So they made use of it to escape from Angel Eyes, in the end having him killed by Blondie during a duel among the three of them. For me that has very big significance, literally, goodness will always prevail.

The Good, The Bad, The Ugly

I love Clint Eastwood's acting in this film. His character was that silent but you know that there in him was a hidden aggression. He will follow other characters, example Tuco but you would be surprised in the end knowing that he always had the last laugh. Pretty convincing. As for Lee Van Cleef, his face tells his character. He was like any of those villain in Tagalog movies we used to see frequently, best examples are Rez Cortez and Ruel Vernal. He had a face full of fierce, and most especially, he had the killer moustache. Kidding aside, the acting I loved the most was of Eli Wallach's. Maybe because he made me laugh all the time. He's not that ugly but he's funny guy. Even when you're just looking at him.

In this film is exhibited the legend of great gunmen in whole of history maybe. I wonder if there really existed men having those exceptional skills in gun handling. They can kill distant people and can break a rope by their guns from afar. Very classic.

The cinematography is great. Special effects fine. Camera angles are exceptional, I love how the camera switches in between lines of characters. Also the part when Tuco was running around the cemetery. The close ups really are good trademarks for western. Since it's really tough to catch men's emotions to the camera, close ups help extract feelings of emotions, grief, and sometimes indifference. The editing was excellent. It has progressing story line. The music is good. Very western in all aspects.

The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly is one classic western you surely would not want to miss.
