    i can't quite put my finger on it but there's something that makes this film wonderful. it could be the alluring older woman, the acting in general or dustin hoffman being in it himself. perhaps it's the coming of age aspect... something to celebrate... hmm, who knows? it's just ...( read more)worthwhile

    Very sexy and at the same time awkward. The humor comes out more and more with repeated viewing. At least it did for me. Now that I'm done with school that feeling of just floating aimlessly in a pool or just sitting motionless under the surface is truly a scary thing to face ...( read more)in ones future. Sowing wild oats is just a distraction, but when considering what one will do for the rest of one's life, I feel that today as much as then in the 1960s many feel direction-less.

    Benjamin: Mrs. Robinson, if you don't mind my saying so, this conversation is getting a little strange.

    Even for today, this is one of the most offbeat romantic comedies out there. It is also hilarious. The movie starts almost right away into getting to it's main plot point. Du...( read more)stin Hoffman is being seduced by one of his parents friends...and he succumbs to it.

    Hoffman is great in this role, he is perfectly and realistically awkward in scenes that call for it. The movie uses this angle as a gateway into the real point of this story, Benjamin does not understand what to do with his life after college.

    Mr. Braddock: Ben, what are you doing?
    Benjamin: Well, I would say that I'm just drifting. Here in the pool.
    Mr. Braddock: Why?
    Benjamin: Well, it's very comfortable just to drift here.
    Mr. Braddock: Have you thought about graduate school?
    Benjamin: No.
    Mr. Braddock: Would you mind telling me then what those four years of college were for? What was the point of all that hard work?
    Benjamin: You got me.

    These scenes work because they combine humor with a good sense of realism, as well as the way Hoffman plays it all together.

    Later on, Mrs. Robinson's daughter, Elaine played by the adorable Katherine Ross, enters the scene, and after a perfect scene that is funny and cruel at the same time, they fall in love. This all leads to the odd predicaments of the characters, building up to a finale that is so outrageous, but in the final moments rings true to be kind of...nice.

    The movie is also very stylized, which is good and bad. Despite some of the songs, I was not much of a fan of the repeated use of some of the Simon and Garfunkel songs, but others worked very well.

    The way the camera moves, the cuts and fades are also effective enough to create a sense of tone. Director Mike Nichols does a great job at pioneering something different for American film at the time.

    Good movie, with strong performances from Hoffman and Anne Bancroft as well, supplying a performance that becomes better and better on repeated viewings.

    Mr. Braddock: Don't you think that idea is a little half-baked?
    Benjamin: Oh no, Dad, it's completely baked.

    I absolutely loved it. GREAT romantic comedy. Dustin Hoffman and Anne Bancroft are hilarious. :)

    Clever lines, nice transition, better than most of romance movies these days. Pay attention folks, you might've learn something.

    Intelligent people can also be stupid. Wisdom is one thing, intellect is another, so the fun part, when it's all messed up, we tend to digress. It is a so...( read more)try of love, which proved love is all that matters. What a movie, both thrilling and entertaining.
