Although this movie has received criticism for its stereotypical and possibly xenophobic depiction of the Japanese treatment of allied POW's in the second world war, it is in fact a very accurate, fact-based retelling of the events surrounding one of the greatest morale building events for a battle weary America in the second world war. Filmed in the classic style of the WWII movies of the fifties, it is fast paced and does reflect the unfortunate attitude of the Japanese to the prisoners of war, which they held in contempt for the shame of allowing themselves to be captured.

War is hell, but this fact should not detract from the history portrayed, which is accurate. The allies were ultimately the winners in the most destructive war in human history, but individual stories of heroism and courage continue to ring true to one's spirit. especially in our difficult times.

Fine individual performances do justice to the real people who made in through this hellacious experience.

This is a really good war drama movie full of hope despite of prevalent despair. I was just really bummed that one of my favorite characters didnt make it in time. You have to watch who it is. On a side comment: I think Connie Nielsen kinda looks like Thalia someitmes in the movie. Maybe its just the lighting but still.^_^

Very well done movie. The story is true and unbelievable. I couldn't imagine what it was like to do such things.

One of my favorite war movies! It's close to my heart, too, since my grandfather was held in Cabanatuan for a while during his POW time.

I watched this during AMC's Memorial Movie Marathon in order to remember and honor our troops. Although war movies aren't my favorite genre, this is based on a true story. The rescue of 500 American & Filipino POWs from the Japanese prison camp at Cabanatuan during WWII.

Wow! I was very impressed and touched by this movie, especially knowing that it is based on a true story! Make sure to watch the extra features and see the real men on whom this movie is based.

Good film. Not a story on the forefront of an escape plan set in time of second world war in the Philippines. A bit surreal.

A stunning and triumphant action-packed adeventure. Powefrul and herioc. A truly effective story. One of the finest war films since Saving private Ryan. It's The Great Escape meets The Thin Red Line. Roushing, thrilling and exhilerating. The cast is remarkable. Benjiamin Bratt and James Franco are simply great. Joseph Fiennes is remarkable

Nice adaptation of a true story. Wish the DVD special features contained more information on the principles.

This movie wasn't bad. I liked how they showed three sides of the story, and they drift off from the true story too much. I think the acting was well done and it had a lot of great elements to it.

While not superb this film is still very well done and covers one of the most forgotten parts of World War II.

This is a very underwhelming WWII drama that has a great story but unfortunately it never really develops it, instead it becomes a dull and by-the-numbers war film. The acting from the cast was okay but they don't much to do with their characters (Joseph Fiennes however gives the film's best performance) and the direction was a little lifeless. Luckily it does have its moments and it does pick up in the last half. It could have a great but just a very forgettable one.

More of a drama then a war film,it takes on the perspectives of the men inside a japanese POW camp, the marine rangers, and the resistance in Manila. It would have been better with a more detailed beach landing.

Great story of risk and sacrifice. While the film might seem a bit slow at times, the story it tells is well worth it.

It was, uhm... okey. It had a great plot, and pretty good actors, but it still didn't go all the way for me.
I think it was trying to be moving and serious, but it still didn't touch me like some of the other warmovies that I've seen.
I'll give it credit for the effort, but still, I've seen better.

This movie is rather gut renching,I don't know why,but when I watched it I had to look away more than once.It does not appear to be very gory and it really isn't,I think it was the sheer mistreatment of the soldiers that made me a little ugh.James Frano....oh sooooo hot.:)War movies rock.I love the action,I am not one for the real, real intense gore, this was not that bad.Windtalkers is just disgusting. It is soooooo gory! But its good.I love this movie!!

did u know that this true-to-life movie set on world war II event is very historical to the U.S. military history?...coz' this is their most succesful battle against japanese imperialist with very minimal casualty(2 deaths to the american rangers,1 to the libarated prisoner only because he is so very sick, & 21 amongst filipino guerillas), so very few soldiers to rescue many prisoners-of-war (for 3 years at cabanatuan prison camp), & at least 500 american captives to rescue....

I love this movie. This is one of the best WWII movies ever to me. I love it. James Franco does a great job acting. And I even like the small scene that Brett Tucker gets even tho its only 2 small scences

This movie was good, but not the best. IT had a lot of action and quite a bit of drama. It actually made me tear up at the end. It was so sad. Joseph Fiennes is wonderful as Daniel whatever his last name is. And James Franco has a really good role (that sadly has no smiles and not many big action scenes... but oh well). It doesn't deserve an R rating in my book. Very good. (though probably best not watched after Band of Brothers).
