Eerie haunted house story follows a paranormal investigator who gathers three people to a large estate to study the supernatural. Understated, low key and elegant, this horror film is based on the novel "The Haunting of Hill House" by Shirley Jackson. Film remarkably builds ten...( read more)sion without being explicit, but rather suggesting spooky events of a psychological nature. One of the true great horror films of the 60s has over time become the quintessential haunted house movie.

A scientist arranges to spend a weekend in an allegedly haunted house with two assistants and its playboy heir to try and scientifically substantiate supernatural phenomena. Another horror classic from the golden age that shows that CGI may very possibly have been the death of th...( read more)e genre. This film is all atmosphere, and the tension is palpable. The characters are all well drawn and interesting, particularly Julie Harris as the psychologically damaged assistant who begins to unravel as the air of menace increases. In fact this film is more of a psychological chiller than a horror, it reminding me more of Hitchcock's Rebecca than anything else. But the star of the show is definitely the house! It's a brilliant location with just the right level of Gothic foreboding, brought to life with some beautiful black and white photography and wonderfully artful direction. I felt it needed another character somewhere between the pretentious prof and vacuous playboy to balance the group dynamic, and teenage Saw/Rob Zombie fans will probably find it a yawn fest, but anyone who enjoys a cerebral and atmospheric horror film need look no further.

one of the best scary movies ever in my book cause you never see what's scarin' the bejesus out of you, BUT YOU KNOW IT'S THERE! i haven't seen it's equal yet. it's the original, the real deal, w/o the chainsaws, the serrated edged knifes, and w/o the buckets of red corn syrup....( read more) and it knows what you're thinking. it knows cause it wants you, wants to be together with you...alone...in the dark...together...alone.

Excellent old-school angst-ridden classic yet not really horror movie but classic still even though not completely horror while it could have been even if it's not.

Unsettling or disturbing is a term that gets thrown around a lot today. Usually in regards to Cronenberg or Miike or Irreversible.

This film a text book of how to achieve an atmosphere of menace and unease without showing a thing

The best ghost film ever - and not one single drop of blood.

A bit over-dramatic, like many films during this time period, but entertaining overall. Richard Johnson plays a wonderful ghost hunter (as well as lending one of his lines to White Zombie's Super-Charger Heaven).

I just love the tension it built, the ambiguity, the mind-playing..The eeriness, its just so real, I felt like the house was sucking me in too..I must agree, that CGI is never appropriate to scare people this way. An amazing way that is. Please avoid the remake.

The classic one... Thanks that Robert Wise came up with the idea. Creepy classic. Avoid the remake at all costs.
