  Another terrifying Italian shocker from the legendary Lucio Fulci. A family move into a creepy old house and are unaware that living in the cellar is the flesh-eating zombie of a 19th Century surgeon. The little boy is soon a friend with the ghost of the late doctors daughter who warns them to stay away but to little effect. The creature gruesomely kills and dismembers a variety of Estate Agents, Copulating teenagers and Babysitters leading to a terrifying finale in the corpse-strewn cellar. The Lucio Fulci trademark of graphic gore is abundant as ever but it is the atmosphere that makes this movie stand out. Bumps in the night and the ominous crying of children coming from the cellar are just some of the factors that assault and disturb the viewer. This is a truly amazing movie that relies on shock and terror rather than revulsion. The gore just adds to what is already a truly chilling little tale of cannibalism and depravity that will linger in the mind long after you've forgotten about the illogical plot and poor dubbing. One of Fulci's best films. Deserves its cult reputation.

Creepy and occasionally gory but the cheesy sound effects and annoying music and dubbing do wear on the mind. Still, very good.

  Although not as great as The Beyond, Zombi 2 or City Of The Living Dead, The house By The Cemetery is an effective horror film and is in my opinion a misunderstood classic (like most of Lucio Fulci's other works before it) House By The Cemetery is a very good and intriguing Horror film, it definitely kept me in suspense up until the end. In my opinion, Lucio Fulci is underrated and he deserves more praise for having broken new ground in the Horror genre. His movies set a new standard in horror, as they where more gory and disgusting than anything ever put on film. House By The Cemetery continues the tradition of good gore effects pioneered by Fulci himself, yet people seem to not appreciate this film compared to his previous filmography of gorifying genius. Even though lacking in on screen gore at times , House By The Cemetery though a weaker film in his repertoire, is still a very enjoyable one, and like many Fulci fans have said, this is one of his last truly great films.

  Fulci tries to make a hybrid between Lovecraft, the shining and amytiville, adding his explicit fascination with carnage. Too bad the story barely makes sense, because this guilty pleasure keeps you waiting for more and more hemoglobin.

  A Lucio Fulci Film, That's one ogf those slasher type films. Little boy was a trip throughout the movie. Not a real scary movie, but a good late night thunderstorm movie.

  Fulci made an enjoyable but flawed movie here. The little boy "Bob" has the most hilarious voice dubbing; with his peachy-face, it made all of his scenes funny. There were some nice gorey over-the-top death scenes which kept oozing on and on. The Italian actors in an American setting didn't quite fit. The music worked, and reminded me a lot of "The Beyond". Much work was put into creating an atmospheric haunted house setting with creaky doors, staircases and dusty floorboards. The story had some slightly confusing elements. I didn't know what to make of the tomb inside the house. I liked the monsterous Dr. Freudenstein, who was a composite of different body parts. The bat attack was silly and horrific at the same time. Some questionable things were the ghostly little girl, the mysterious babysitter Ann, and how the monster could exist in the basement through various home owners. Overall, it's a fun creepy little flick.

  *** out of **** "The House by the Cemetery" is an exceptional example of a movie so bad that it's actually pretty good; perhaps even great. Under the direction of Lucio "Godfather of Gore" Fulci; it's a film plagued by boring characters, narrative incoherence, a slew of illogical situations, silly dialogue, and fame by way of the Home Video market. Okay, maybe that last one isn't so bad; given it's more of a fate, and not one that all films are lucky enough to meet. In my experience, people only like a movie if there's something about it if they like; because you cannot like, love, or even despise something without reason. The films of Fulci are often noted for three things: their gore, their atmosphere, and their surrealistic qualities. "The House by the Cemetery" is really no different when compared to Fulci's other works. Here's what I've learned to do. I come into these movies with an open mind now; something I was unable to do when I had first begun discovering them. Yes, as a critic; I'm not supposed to like movies like this, because in theory, they are trashy, and nothing more. Indeed, there are few redeemable qualities to any of Fulci's films, other than that they can be immensely enjoyable as long as you're able to suspend your disbelief. We're expected to do that with just about every other film, so, why is it so difficult to do it when it's absolutely necessary? "The House by the Cemetery" had me hooked and entertained because it displays all of what I've come to expect from the great gore-master. I've come to believe that Fulci is a poet of the macabre; and his films are all about style and the basic set-up of horror rather than substance. That's a logic that has always been prevalent in horror; but it seems to have been abandoned as of late for bigger, better things known as story and characters. To me, the story is almost unimportant. But here's the basic run-down; a family of three - Lucy (Catrionna MacColl), Norman (Paolo Malco), and son Bob (Giovanni Frezzi, who has the most annoying voice EVER in the English dub of the film) - move from their city home in New York to somewhere a little quieter. The house rests just outside of Boston; and it is, indeed, a house by the cemetery. However, upon arrival, it becomes very clear that something just isn't right about this particular homestead. The sound of a whimpering, unseen child is heard each night and sometimes in the day. The door leading to the basement is barricaded by boards conveniently nailed right on it. Also, every board in the house - be it in the basement, in the walls, or in the attic - creaks non-stop. It's enough to drive anyone mad. However, a great evil lurks underneath the floorboards. There is a damn good reason why the basement is sealed off; and why the house gives off an ominous aura. That reason is Dr. Freudstein; a tall, horrifically deformed man who went bat-shit crazy and became an amateur surgeon of some sorts. It is said that he died and was later buried; but this could be a cover-up for the fact that he still maintains existence. Of course, this is a very predictable movie; so from the beginning his name is mentioned, we know for a fact that Freudstein is still alive; operating on helpless victims and their tender flesh, while those above resume the day's typical activities. Even though it's a simple, on-dimensional horror story; it has its peculiarities. Lucio Fulci can make films both fascinating and unintentionally hilarious; such a formula is employed here, and to me, it works. "The House by the Cemetery" is a stupid, senseless film; made without wit or intent other than to shock through gore and jump scares. But it's also a film that now works as a sort of Midnight Movie; and if you look at it from that perspective, then it kind of works. It's been given a new, polished transfer from Blue Underground - and now, you can see it as it was meant to be seen; without some half-assed English dub, with restored images of Giannetto De Rossi's fantastic make-up/gore effects, Walter Rizzati's creepy original score, and Lucio Fulci's full devotion. I'd say it's one of the director's best; and whether that means anything to you or not depends on how much you either love or loath the famed voyeur of the grotesque.

The story is completly nuts and nonsense but once again, Fulci pulls brilliant atmosphere and kill scenes that make everything else seems so secondary and pointless. It's truly the heart and soul of the movie.

  I've only seen two Lucio Fulci movies before (''Zombi 2'' and ''The Beyond'') and of all three I'd say ''The House by the Cemetery'' contains the most, and more developed, story, as well as it's the one that puts a bigger effort in buildin suspense. The problem, which is the same problem I contantly have with Fulci, is that the editing is all wrong and completely kills the film's pacing, making lag most of the time. The gore is fantastic, though.

  Another gem from Lucio Fulci. This video nasty is what you would get if you mixed the typical slasher fare with some subtle haunted house devices and large doses of what one should expect from Italian gore flicks. Like the rest of Fulci's movies (that I've seen thus far) the gore is nothing less than modern art and really is in a league of its own, not just in terms of brutality but also in terms of inventiveness. That being said although the gore looks really good sometimes it is just nonsensical (Dr. Freudsteins so badass that he bleeds MAGGOTS!!!!) Not that that bothers me too much as the ends definently do justify the means. The dubbing is expectedly a drawback, especially in the choice of voice for Bob who just might have gotten the most annoying voice over I've ever heard, and if that isn't the most effeminate scream I've ever heard come from a boy, then I haven't heard shit. All in all very solid and mandatory viewing for Horror fans.

  Awesome film that feels like H.P. Lovecraft meets Fulci. Some strange scenes, including a maid who cleans murder scenes and a mother who really should try using her brain once in a while, but what an awesome ending.
