The Householder

It is about an emotionally immature schoolteacher who learns an important lesson about responsibility in marriage. It begins when he finds himself betrothed to a stranger. The marriage occurs and both husband and wife try to adjust. Eventually, the school teacher has an affair with an American, but it only teaches him to appreciate his wife and his need for her. He returns home a changed man only to find that his wife has gone. He spends the rest of the film trying to win her back.

Critic Reviews from Rotten Tomatoes

"An early Merchant-Ivory work, fresher than their more recent fare."
