With a visual treat of raw despair and one of the more effective insights into the current struggles of war in the third world - The Hurt Locker certainly has it's strong points. The issue with the film however, is that these strong points sit on the surface, leaving the blank an...( read more)d sometimes monotonous struggles to push through - with little apparent meaning or purpose for something that has already been established in the beginning of the film. The Hurt Locker begins with a message - the Iraq war is a losing and difficult battle, but the film does very little to build on this.

Like Platoon, Full Metal Jacket, and Apocalypse Now for the Vietnam era, The Hurt Locker is one of the great war films of the day. An undeniably intense, visceral experience, the film is so real on so many levels, so clear and powerful in its representation, that it seems to say ...( read more)whatever we think it should about modern war.

After delivering some of the best action films of the 90s, namely Point Blank and Strange Days, director Kathryn Bigelow returns with a very intense war drama about an Army bomb squad team in todays Iraq. While the movie only has mini roles to offer for stars, it's Jeremy Renner'...( read more)s show anyway, who gives a very convincing performance as the bomb expert. The almost documentary style of the film takes you right into the middle of things and doesn't let go for two very intense hours. The impression of imminent thread hanging over the soldier's heads expands to the audience easily. The few action scenes are well timed and shot, especially the sniper duel across a valley is excellent. And although the topic of the film is as current as it gets and accordingly explosive (literally), it neither preaches any political point of view nor glorifies heroism. Its view on things are realistic and sobering, sometimes even sickeningly so (the body bomb). Exciting and intelligent, one of the highlights of the year 2009.

It's a nerve-reckingly tense and explosively suspenseful film.A riveting and full-throttle action-thriller. A near perfect film. A masterpiece. A knockout, the action and tension build up then explodes right in your face when you least expect it. A brilliant, sizzeling and well-constructed character study and very well-crafted piece of work from Kathrynn Bigelow. An exhilerating edge of your seat entertainment. An all-star cast who all deliver great performances. Jeremy Renner is a revelation, he gives a stunning, unique and outstanding performance. Anthony Mackie is electric, giving an equally impressive performance that shines. David Morse is fantastic. Guy Pearce is teriffic, Ralph Fiennes is brilliant. A film of profound and gut-busting impact that has not been seen since Platoon. Flat-out electrifying. A must-see movie. This is definately a movie you will want to see again and remember as one of the best films of it's kind if not the decade.

A moving film that contains some of the most tense scenes I've seen in a long time. Although it begins to slow down towards the end, an otherwise very enjoyable movie

One of the best modern day war movies which is set in Iraq as we follow 3 US explosive experts on the front line doing the toughest job in the world - disarming car bombs, road side bombs and threats from suicide bombers. It just shows what a dangerous job these guys do. Kathryn ...( read more)Bigelow does a superb turn directing this suspenseful movie. There's a couple of brief cameos from Guy Pearce and Ralph Fiennes but this movie belongs to the 3 leads especially Jeremy Renner as the reckless Sgt James. The Hurt Locker is thrilling and gripping. Definitely up there as one of the best movies of 2009.
