Very good movie! About a man in love with a Princess, that is to be wed to a Crowned Prince. He becomes an illusionist, to try to win her heart and the events that take place along the way. This is a very good movie and I highly recommend it.
This was the movie that convinced me to start watching modern movies again.
I know that some people dislike this movie. I honestly can't understand why. The story was good, the cinematography was wonderfully elegant and beautiful, and the acting was done well. Paul Giamatti did the best job, but I think Edward Norton acted well also. Norton was heavily criticized and this was named his worst performance, but I disagree. His character, Eisenheim, is not supposed to be emotional in any way -- he is very introverted and beyond that, guarded. Eisenheim prevents himself from showing emotion. For an actor or actress, I would imagine that playing a guarded character would be harder than playing an emotional one, so Norton didn't do that bad. I was, at first, disappointed to see that Jessica Biel took the part of the duchess, but she did an above average job of acting, so I was satisfied.
Predictability. Is it a good thing? No. Is The Illusionist a good film? No.
The boring title sequence sets the tone for the rest of this overly serious film, which is unintentionally amusing when it isn't tedious. There are no developed characters, and the 'old photo' style is distracting, while the music desperately tries to arouse interest in this cold, distant sleepwalk of a story. The worst part has to be the twist, which has been blatant throughout, to the point where I craved a double bluff, but was not rewarded and discovered that no, the film really does think we are that stupid. Also, the 'revelation' scene in which we learn what we knew was going on anyway, is both clumsily childish in its awfulness, and all assumption on the part of Uhl, the only character, so pointless anyway.
Tag Line: 'Nothing Is What It Seems'? Now that's another of those unintentionally funny bits.
I actually like these kind of dark and mysterious movies.. with magic and tricks.. but I just can't say that this one blew my away.. I liked the ending.. it was a surprise.. but still, there are so many better magical movies than this one..
it was unbelievable!! i was really amazed in his tricks esp. when he make the orange tree grow in an empty pot.. then how the way he manipulated everyone with his tricks! it was amazing... astigin tlga... the story for me was great i never imagined that it was just planned..hahaha
It's good. A bit slow and silent but not boring. Some parts of the movie are predictable. Anyway I liked the final twist and all the magical atmosphere of the film.
Edward Norton is an excellent actor, since his early days in his acting career. I remember him for Primal Fear, and I can see that nothing has been lost, if anything, much more has been gained.
A fun movie -- not like all the others. I had figured out what would happen 3/4 of the way through. Usually I know what's happening earlier than that, so this was a good movie.
Great Movie, reminds me alot of The Prestige, this movie was actually made the same year as the Prestige and were equally liked. Set in early 20th-century Vienna, a stage magician uses his magic to win back the great love of his life from a brutal enemy, her fiance, who is also the powerful crowned prince of Austria.
Amaziing!Edward Norton Was Overwhelming nd V Touchy nd Smart!! :D The End is the Best Part as its Really Teasy :P ! There aint much stars in here but if there were Id definitely give it more!
<3 !!!!! The Ending is Waaay Toooo Teasy !! :P Amaaziiin !!
Este filme é maravilhoso, com bom enredo, que prende atenção. O final é surpreendente e muitíssimo interessante; todos os efeitos são muito bons. Não imaginava nunca um final tão perfeito!
A rather mediocre illusion, much thanks to the slow-paced storyline. Do not get misguided by the films' title and tricks, on this film lies a lovestory. And as I was watching the film, there was something holding me back from getting amazed by the great Eisenheim (played by crowd favorite Edward Norton). Also, unfortunetely, he was easily outshone by Paul Giamatti's convincing and likable character, which was frankly disappointing, since Norton was not only the main character, but the one we were all rooting for and expecting the most from as well.
And yes, forever will this film be compared to Nolan's, because even I have fallen for these films' comparison. And so, here is the truth: It is, much, much easier to like The Illusionist rather than The Prestige. There, you become more confused by the minute, that might even start to aggravate oneself. Here, there aren't exactly many hints, but like all puzzling mysteries, it unravels its secrets and wraps up the loose ends, yet all in all strives to be mysterious. In the end, people are blown away, though not by the actual ending, but by them never seeing it coming. They are not dazzled by the ending itself since there isn't much to it. It sort of felt thoughtless, and did not explain everything entirely, simply because the audience doesn't want to know. With a lovestory involved, they don't really care. And that, my friends, is the biggest and most clever trick The Illusionist pulled and fooled so, so many.
So, with much misfortune I must quote a top critic and say that the film, 'it does not dazzle'.
Visually beautiful and stunningly realized, the Illusionist has incredible performances (even from Jessica Biel!) and a truly captivating aesthetic that makes you believe in magic all over again.
A very decent movie which maybe hasn't had the credit it deserves because of the superior "The Prestige" that was in the theaters at the same time as The Illusionist.
Wow, I'm still trying to figure this one out completely in my mind lol. It was such an elaborate illusion there in the end!! It's amazing the kinds of things he does in this movie & that last one, awesome stuff! I'm glad it happened :)
great movie and great acting by norton, but still think it was kindda fake they way the ditective realised everythimg at the end, but other then that two thumbs up
Seul bémol, un peu long selon moi. Aurai pu etre plus court, surtout pour le contenu.
Long credits but beautiful scenery and set plus a twist that will fool the audience until the end if they don't pay heed to what the protagonist magician Eisenhiem says.
