Blessed with the extraordinary gift of guiding the imaginations of others, Doctor Parnassus is cursed with a dark secret. An inveterate gambler, thousands of years ago he made a bet with the devil, Mr. Nick, in which he won immortality. Centuries later, on meeting his one true love, Dr. Parnassus made another deal with the devil, trading his immortality for youth, on condition that when his daughter reached her 16th birthday, she would become the property of Mr Nick.

Valentina is now rapidly approaching this ‘coming of age’ milestone and Dr. Parnassus is desperate to protect her from her impending fate. Mr. Nick arrives to collect but, always keen to make a bet, renegotiates the wager. Now the winner of Valentina will be determined by whoever seduces the first five souls. Enlisting a series of wild, comical and compelling characters in his journey, Dr. Parnassus promises his daughter’s hand in marriage to the man that helps him win.

In this captivating, explosive and wonderfully imaginative race against time, Dr. Parnassus must fight to save his daughter in a never-ending landscape of surreal obstacles – and undo the mistakes of his past once and for all!

This was by far the weirdest movie I've ever seen. Not even the amazing cast could save this one. I was thoroughly confused and bored throughout the entire movie.

What can I say about this haha its like watching a film based on Salvador Dali's paintings and not much else really, very very interesting to observe but the story is pretty loose and kinda pointless really, maybe Gilliam's most off the wall film. The question is would it have be...( read more)en better had Ledger lived and completed it?? I think yes as the film is clearly missing Ledger's presence and the use of other actors to fill in, despite twisting the plot to fit, just doesn't seem right, to me anyway.

To weird for me, couldn't get my head round the point of it and allot of average cgi made things worse.

Somewhat uneven with Ledger not being able to complete the film. There was some really strange Monty Python type humor particularly in the Jude Law segment of Through the Looking Glass. I thought Depp and Farrell did a slightly better job at portraying Tony though. Cole and Ga...( read more)rfield are good as the young members of Doctor Parnassus's sideshow. Verne Troyer adds a great sense of mystery, humor, and resiliency. Waits is quirky and excellent as Mr. Nick. And Plummer gives a surprising performance as the boozy, gambling, immortal Parnassus. I love Gilliam's sense of wonder and creation of fantasy worlds on the other side of the mirror. The thing I liked most about this story was Parnassus telling his life story in which he and Percy (Troyer) were monks telling stories to keep the world going 'round, then through the centuries he spends time as a Christ/Hindu god type figure, and yet he has this on going relationship making wagers with Mr. Nick for people's souls. The spirit of storytelling, of creative imagination, of finding fulfillment or redemption versus the power of distraction and destruction is the ultimate theme here.

Met my expectations of being "out there" but I was hoping for more dream sequences. The dreams made the film interesting but everything outside of that seemed to be dull and bleak. I was under the impression that Heath was hardly in this movie due to his premature passing, but ...( read more)he filmed most of his parts except for the big d sequences. I don't think this movie would have been much better if Ledger had lived to finish the film. Still interesting nevertheless, perplexing.

It must be really strange to live inside Terry Gilliam's head. But watching this film is probably the closest anyone else could ever come to being there. There is much of this film that is a little bit less-then-engaging, but the dreamscapes that Gilliam paints in the world beyon...( read more)d the mirror more than make up for the drab and ho-hum real world scenes. I am such a sucker for mental subjectivity on film, and I absolutely loved seeing how the imaginarium manifests itself differently according to the person whose fantasy it is. Within the world of the story, it makes perfect sense to have the Tony character played by different actors when he's on the other side of the mirror, and in a film this bonkers (or gonzo, if you will), it seems as natural as the stone head of a constable rising out of the terrain. It's often a little hard to pin down exactly what is happening in this film's story, and sometimes large chunks of exposition are unceremoniously dropped on the audience like a large cartoon human foot. Speaking of which, the stylized landscape that Gilliam paints behind the mirror are decidedly reminiscent of the animation he did for Monty Python. I didn't really like Tom Waite's character (was he the devil? I wasn't too clear on that) and I think that Johnny Depp played Tony all to briefly. However, there is much more to love about this movie than to bore you. I'd see it again.

At times beautiful, at times shambolic, always warped. So just the standard Gilliam flick then.

This will be remembered as Ledger's final performance and (with a little help from a poor supporting cast) he shows what a great loss he is to the film world.

Considering Gilliam'...( read more)s past history, it is unclear if Parnassus would have been tidier had Ledger not died during filming. If anything, as horrible as it sounds, it may have been of benefit. Having 3 different actors play Ledger's actor sprung a mediocre yarn into life. Ledger is still by far the best actor, but Gilliam's interesting take on dealing with his death is almost poetic.

This movie is really amazing. I already see that a lot of people on here gave it a bad rating, because they didn't understand the movie, but ignorance and stupidity shouldn't keep you away from The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus.
Terry Gilliam did an amazing work on this one!
