The trailer was hilarious.
Probably funnier on paper than film, Ricky Gervais' directorial debut seems to run out of inspiration well before it ends. The premise is brilliant, but after twenty or thirty minutes, it starts to seem like the same joke over and over again. Still, Gervais is perfect, surrounded...( read more)
Cute movie. Who knew that Ricky Gervais had a dramatic streak in him? There wasn't a dry eye in the audience when he tells his mother about the man upstairs. DIdn't quite reach the potential I thought it would, but still enjoyable.
Pretty funny and creative. Very different and the ending is awesome....
I found this movie to be very clever, witty and fresh. An original story that was well played out by Ricky Gervais. I thought that Jennifer Garner was delightful in this role and I think this is some of her best work. Ill admit that the film is a little dry which can be difficult...( read more)
This has such a great premise in it and offers many laughs in the first half before failing to finish it on a high note instead choosing the popcorn movie way out
Somewhat disappointing movie from Ricky Gervais. I've seen a lot better from him. Maybe his ideas work best for TV in a short 25 minute format but this just seemed to drag in some places. It's not a laugh out loud movie by any means, a couple of scenes are funny and made me smile...( read more)
This was a funny story, but after a while the concept got old for me. I get it... he is the only guy in the world that can lie and know one else can conceptualize what he is doing. The humor saved the movie as far as I am concerned.
Although containing one talented cast, I think the film's eyes were bigger than their stomachs. It is funny in parts and I admire the films want to explore bigger themes, but you can't help but think how great this could have been, if not for its somewhat sloppy execution.
A great story can carry any movie and this film proves it. A world with no lying except for one person who has broken the code - its a good thing he was a nice guy. Very funny performance by Gervais whose unique situation in the movie created many opportunities for his comedy t...( read more)
What you see is what you get with Ricky Gervais. A standard film from him.
I laughed once- but that part I had all ready seen on the trailer. As a Christian I was offended by the secret plot. The actual movie of lying became silly. They didn't know where else to go with the story line. Jennifer G. seemed awkward and stiff.
genuinely funny to a point and Louis CK is just awesome in it. Ricky can do no wrong. Of course the people on here rated it low becausE THEY DIDN'T SEE IT!
Funny, but really stupid. I love Ricky Gervais and I love Jennifer Garner but the plot was a little kind of like "Uhm....". I mean, the part about that people can't lie at all was good but the part about the "Man in the Sky" was just lame. Funny, but lame. Rob Lowe is a jerk but ...( read more)
I was expecting it to be funnier than it was - considering it was done by Ricky Gervais. It started out as a comedy, and somehow turned into a religious drama...
Good show. Very original and very funny. I laughed, I cried. I plan to see it again on DVD so I can pause and rewind. Sadly, comedies don't win awards because this one would be worthy. I recommend it unless you are very sensitive about your concept of God and are offended by...( read more)
Pretty middle-of-the-road. I did laugh tons of times but it was also fairly slow all the way thru strangely. Don't be afraid to check it out, it's interesting. But..
What would the world be like if no one knew how to lie because they didn't even know what a lie is? It would be a world where it would be impossible to send out dishonest self promoting signals (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Signalling_theory). It wouldn't be the world as descri...( read more)
Ricky Gervais' best yet. The man writes and performs with such simplicity and humor; and deep within are simple truths and beauty. I vow to see anything Gervais does in the future. he is just one of those few people who have earned my absolute trust.
I wasn't a fan of Ricky Gervais before I found out about this movie. Now I wanna marry him. The reason you ask? A long time ago I proclaimed (to myself of course) if a movie can make me laugh out loud during the opening credits and immediately turn my skepticism into immediate e...( read more)
Hard to put it in words with this great black comedy. I found the concept of it interesting in a society lying doesn't exist, clever. The jokes were funny but not like LoL apart from that people will have different opinions on this judging on religion. It showed a number of obese...( read more)
Really funny idea/concept, but I think they could have made it better and funnier
Very sweet I really enjoyed it. Constantly funny it may not be, but clever it is!
Fun comedy, love Ricky Gervais..doesn't disappoint...cameos were a fun surprise
Was a really good idea but i thought it didnt reach its full potential, I did really enjoy the movie I liked the way it was very funny and then they would have some serious parts to kind of even it out but I thought it was done very well and had some really good cameos. Ricky Ger...( read more)
not the biggest fan of ricky gervais and he doesn't change that in this film. some humourous moments but i found it pretty boring throughout
Another great Gervais comedy film i think this was better than his previous film (Ghost Town). Great Film!!
Definitely has its funny moments...plus I just love the part with my girl from SVU........but I didn't really like how it was mocking Jesus Christ and the Ten Commandments........like I like some movies that kinda mock Christianity but at least they advertised themselves to do so...( read more)
Watched the trailer, didn't appeal. I think it's Mr Gervais. I just don't get his appeal.
The world where everyone tells the truth and movies are history lessons is a scream. Some may and do not like how the Invention of Lying leads to religion. I don't mind myself.
A quaint idea that earns some laughs but then is buzz-killed by a sappy love story. Sure people can't lie...but does that mean EVERYTHING about them comes out in the first second. It should be the invention of shutting up (lets start with Gervais).
If the religious aspect was just left out all together, a lot more people would have loved it I think
