Recent Reviews for The Island of Dr. Moreau
-
I usually only give a rating of half a star to movies that I couldn't go through with.. Well I watched this one to the end but it's sooo terrible that I can't bring myself to rate it any higher !!!
-
Underrated updating of HG Wells's best book. This seems to be one of the most hated films ever made, so I'm not even going to attempt to sway people's opinion of it; I'll just say I've always loved it.
The opening credit sequence is amazing. -
The story of a mad scientist, Marlon Brando in this one, who has created hybrid animal life on his remote island. Unfortunately, this remake is dreck. It'sd just bad. Stinky bad. Brando is about embalmed in this one, and really grossly fat.

Was Frankenheimer doing drugs when he made this?? Val looks delicious on the island, but what the hell is everyone else doing there?

I've seen this movie a couple of times but I didn't realize I liked it until I recorded over the tape it was on... Now I kinda miss it so I guess I did like it. It's pretty twisted though and there's a lot of mindless shrieking and violence that sort of made me zone out during the final "battle"... In retrospect, Fairuza Balk's character is the most interesting in this movie. Her (brief and few) scenes are the ones that stay in your mind. As a side note, this movie helped me discover the song "Night Bird" by Deep Forest. (I also recommend the 2004 remix)

Despite having some good actors and a potentially good story, this adaptation of H.G. Wells' novel of the same name, doesn't really go anywhere.
The sci-fi aspect of the story is definitely there, but the movie fails to take full advantage of it. In the end, this film feels like a sci-fi channel original movie, and I'm not talking about one of the rare good ones. After some decent opening credits, the film starts out like crap. Why the heck did they need to have that stupid fight in the raft? That was a waste of a couple of minutes. Anyway, once the main character, Edward Douglas reaches the island, the film begins to take shape. Unfortunately, once Dr. Moreau makes an appearance, the film crashes back down. Slowly by slowly the story fades away and the film ends up feeling like an action film, but with weird creatures running the show.
On a positive note, the film uses costumes and makeup for the characters rather than CG. There are only 3 human characters in the film, 4 if you count Fairuza Balk, so I give props to the costume and makeup department here. On the other hand, the creatures may frighten a younger audience.
As mentioned earlier, the acting isn't too bad. David Thewlis pulls off the lead and Fairuza Balk is pretty darn sexy. Marlon Brando is nothing special, but Val Kilmer puts on quite a performance, especially in the second half. It really does seem as all the characters in this film are crazy except for Ron Perlman.
Unless you like Marlon Brando or Val Kilmer, I don't see any other reason to watch this film.

I couldn't stand this movie. It grossed me out but I was like 15 when I watched it. Probably would find something good about it now.
-
Terrible - I can't believe I spent money to watch this or that John Frankenheimer was partially responsible for it!
-
I don't know why this movie scared me so much. It was just simply eerie with the Hyena. Maybe I just think of what that would be like...facing down a pack of wild ani-mans.

I love this movie, I know this bitch that could have been cast as one of the creatures from this flick......
-
This movie got a lot of negative reviews, and after watching it many times, I still have no idea why. Now I have heard that there was many troubles making this movie: director change, new directions, Marlon Brando daughter had just killed herself, Val Kilmer was getting divorced and Rob Morrow was replaced by David Thewlis who broke his leg... and the list just goes on. But for me this version of the H.G. Wells story (that has been filmed a few times before) is far from bad. The cast is great and everyone does a great job, I like the make-up and the storyline. I say give this one a try, it has a lot of bad press, but why not make up your own opinion.

The Book IS Absloutely Amazing And The Movie Is Cool In THe First 40 Minutes But After A while it's Get Stupider And Even Worse
David Thewlis Is A BAD CHoice And Great Talents : Brando And Kilmer Are So Wasted
It's A Bad Movie With Two Great Talent -
Horribly disappointing. Movie was stupid, the acting was corny. A cool story that has a lot of potential, but they managed to ruin it.
-
The original is better, this is almost laughable. I don't know what they had in mind, I do know that this could have been much better!
-
All my friends hate this movie, the critics hate this movie, Val Kilmer probably hate this movie, but I like it.
I don't know why though, the make-up is awful, really bad, but the story is impressing and the message is quite clear. "Don't play God and if you try against better knowing, prepare to eat it all up."
Jurassic Park is really just a much much better rip-off from this story. -
Not a terrible movie for when it was made. But the acting could have been a little better. It is quite a strange movie. the plot was interesting but slightly weird. Not bad in all, but could have been better.
-
Richard Stanley got fired because he wanted to make a good movie, and studio execs. brought in Frankenheimer, and he made this piece of crap.
If anyone says otherwise, I'll just stick my fingers in my ears and go "lalala" -
Val Kilmer is pretty cool in this movie ......I think it's the kind of movie you had to have watched when it came out to think its good.....otherwise it could easily just be seen as a neat plot line with lackluster acting with the exception of Kilmer's character
-
Richard Stanley would have made a perfect adaptation of this HG Wells book (see Hardware and Dust Devils to see why) but instead this is full of Val Kilmer. Brando said to him on set...My dear boy, you must not confuse the size of your pay packet for the size of your talent...nice one
-
What a waste of a great sci fi - the acting in this showed that none of the actors ever read the book or thought about actual character developement.
-
Been a few years since I saw this, but I remember having the impression that Brando was just asked to reprise his role in Apocalypse Now. While the makeup and special effects are obviously better than in previous adaptations, the overall production is lackluster and fails to transcend its silliness.
-
This was really weird - not quite what I was expecting. Strange animals, weird pacing and a very unusual performance from Marlon Brando to boot! What happened?
-
A great story, but unfortunately it is just lacking something, kind of like the recent War of the Worlds adaptation.
-
