The Island

Ewan McGregor, Scarlett Johansson, Djimon Hounsou, Sean Bean, Steve Buscemi, Ethan Phillips, Shawnee Smith, Michael Clarke Duncan

Lincoln Six-Echo (McGregor) is a resident of a seemingly utopian but contained facility in the mid-21st century. Like all of the inhabitants of this carefully controlled environment, Lincoln hopes to ...( read more  read more... )be chosen to go to the "The Island," reportedly the last uncontaminated spot on the planet. But Lincoln soon discovers that everything about his existence is a lie. He and all of the other inhabitants of the facility are actually human clones whose only purpose is to provide "spare parts" for their original human counterparts. Realizing it is only a matter of time before he is "harvested," Lincoln makes a daring escape with a fellow resident named Jordan Two-Delta (Johansson). Pursued by the forces of the institute that once housed them, Lincoln and Jordan engage in a race for their lives to literally meet their makers.

Ewan McGregor, Scarlett Johansson, Djimon Hounsou and Steve Buscemi. How did this film go so wrong? Michael Bay, that?s what! Watch Logan's Run instead or THX 1138 or the news or read a book, have a bath?

Apart from the bad casting of Mcgregor this is a good sci-fi romp that looks gorgeous and is a thrill a minute. Not too original but it flows well with great action and good futuristic concepts and ideas. Could be a modern day 'Blade Runner', just afew tweaks needed. The film rea...( read more)lly does look very good, well worth the viewing for that, very good design here.

"You've been chosen. The Island awaits you."

What if you would find out that your whole life is nothing but a lie? That your only purpose is to bring life to someone who looks exactly like you but is not you? Michael Bay's shot at the scifi thriller genre turns out to be a quite...( read more) exciting piece of cinema but it also has some faults.

The first half of the movie is very interesting and suspense at its best. Bay really knows how to make perfect action sequences. The scene where the two lead characters are on a truck and they're being chased by mercenaries is brilliant. It does resemble the action of 'The Matrix' movies.

But when Lincoln (Ewan McGregor) and Jordan (Scarlett Johansson) meets Lincoln's original self, the movie does lose some of its appeal for some time. After that the film shows some glimpses of good cinema but never manages to match the first half of the film. And the mandatory sex scene is nothing but an embarrassment and should've been cut from the film.

McGregor and Johansson would not have been my choices for the leads. Okay, McGregor has been involved in the 'Star Wars' franchise and knows how to be in action movies but Johansson, who I admit is gorgeous looking, seems a bit lost throughout the movie. Sean Bean is once again the bad guy and knows how to do his thing but the real scene stealer is Steve Buscemi. Always liked him and still do. A face everyone knows but I still think that he's a bit underrated.

    "What's God?
    - Well, you know, when you want something really bad and you close your eyes and you wish for it? God's the guy that ignores you."

Bay has made successful movies in the past. Most of his movies have been hits and brought lots of money to the production studios. 'The Island' was somewhat of a failure but although it gave less money back, it surely is way better than 'Pearl Harbor'... The action is solid and the film does manage to hold the interest 'til the end of the film. Some plot holes occur but that's common in these big budget, blockbuster intended movies.

Who would believe it? All I know is, people will do anything to survive. I want to live and I don't care how

    Excellent film.
The concept of freedom is well described so as human selfishness.
The most frightful thing is to think that something like this is ...( read more)quite capable to happen in the future.
