The Jane Austen Book Club

Kathy Baker, Maria Bello, Marc Blucas, Emily Blunt, Amy Brenneman

As five women and one enigmatic man meet to discuss the works of Jane Austen, they find their love lives playing out in a 21st century version of her novels. Sylvia (Amy Brenneman), is shocked when he...( read more  read more... )r husband Daniel (Jimmy Smits), leaves her after 20 plus years and three children. Jocelyn (Maria Bello), her unmarried best friend, distracts herself from her unacknowledged loneliness by breeding dogs. Prudie (Emily Blunt) is a young French teacher, in possession of a worthy husband yet distracted by persistent fantasies about sex with another man. The many times married Bernadette (Kathy Baker) develops a yearning for one more chance at happiness. Beautiful, risk-taking Allegra (Maggie Grace), Sylvia and Daniel's lesbian daughter, has quit talking to her lover. And Grigg (Hugh Dancy), a young science fiction fan and computer whiz, seems horribly both out of place and obliviously at ease as the only man to be invited into the book circle.

Movie about a book club for 6 Jane Austen novels. The members of the club realise they have a lot in common with the characters in Jane Austen's books. Which helps them to make changes to their own relationships.

A wonderful little story about relationships. Makes romantic ideals a bit more realistic. Good acting and writing. Enjoyable and touching.

This is the most obvious example of a "chick flick" from last year.....( read more). and I really enjoyed it a lot. I loved the fact that literature was incorporated into the film as the central idea, it really made this movie a pleasure to watch. I've only read two of Jane Austen's novels myself, but I don't think you need to have read her books to appreciate the themes and morals of this film.

The cast is fantastic, but most of the praise goes to the incomparable Emily Blunt. She first caught my eye in The Devil Wears Prada in a fantastic debut and now she's actually making something of herself.

    Full review coming soon.

Enjoyable, cozy movie that explores the relationships of a group of people whose experiences are reflected in the books and heroines of Jane Austen. As a fan of Jane Austen, I knew this movie would appeal to me. If you enjoy films like Love Actually or Notting Hill, you'll enjoy ...( read more)The Jane Austen Book Club as well.
