The preview made the movie look like it was going to be so much better than it actually is... I haven't read the book yet, but it's sitting in my library for the near future. On some forums, I've read that the movie is better than the book but I'm really hoping it's the reverse.
In any case, the movie felt like it only had clips of acting bc the stories were always interrupted with the month markers showing each person reading the designated book-of-the-month. Despite the segmented effect, my favorite character was Prudy (Emily Blunt). Even though she was the most repressed of the entire group, I felt like her character portrayed the greatest depth in her emotions as she wavered between restraint and release, between accepting things the way they are and reaching for more/better.
Though I wouldn't add this to the rewatch list, it made me want to start my own Jane Austen book club.
I've never read the book, 'cause the title seemed too pretentious, but I liked this movie very much. The characters are strong, and it's interesting how the similarities between some of them and Austen's characters are subtle . Though I recognized right away Emma, Marianne Dashwood and Elizabeth Bennet, some other characters were discovered for me as the movie went by. This movie is so lovely, I wish I had a book club like that. Honorific mention to Emily Blunt for a great performance.
I haven't read the book because it's not my typical read but I really enjoyed the movie. It was refreshing to see a movie with no sex or violence and showing books as part of our lives.
This is a definitly Girls night in movie. About 6 people come together and make a jane Austen Book Club and realize that thier lives are just like the books.
Though not typically my favorite genre of film, I really enjoyed this movie. The cast and story line were excellent. I will definately watch this again.
good movie ....makes u wanna get up and read one of jane austen's books but i kinda wished in the end that the french teacher ended up with her 18 or 19 yrs old student
wow, beyond impressive, you don't need to know anything about Jane Austen to get this movie, the story of the books and how it connects with the lives of the club members is weaved together nicely.
The movie have an indeniable charm in the start, than we realize that we don,t really care about any character of the movie or the link they mysteriously try to found with the books and finally, we fall again for this mid-charming romantic, mid-dramatic and cute comedy.
I found this film semi-boring and predictable but I still felt compelled to finish watching it. I am sure the book is better but I haven't read it so I can't say.
This is an absoltely wonderful story that I just love - Hey! I like chic flix ok!!! I wouldn't be surprised if it was a ploy by the publisher of Jane Austin books to generate more sales - as if they need them!
An excellent film. One that I would watch over and over again and not get sick of. A film that makes a non Jane Austen reader, want to read Jane Austen. The chemistry between the actors was amazing, particulary between Hugh Dancy and Maria Bello. The soundtrack was wonderful to.
it's true. you don't have to know the books to appreciate this movie. I might know a thing or two about Austen, but I absolutely don't know much about the inner workings of her characters to have an opinion.
But the movie actually made me want to read more of Jane Austen (if only I had the time! I will find time. I will make time!)
Major chick flick. being a chick, I loved it! and Hugh Dancy may not be a dreamboat, but damn it, I love him too!
Quite a compelling story. I love the intersection of all these stories when they come together and how they all unfolded. Loved Hugh Dancy and Emily Blunt's performances.
I enjoyed the actors more than the plot of the story as I found a more predictability about it as it neared the end. Liked the characters the actors played also.
A very charming movie. I really enjoyed it and I know nothing about the books of Austen. It's just a very straightforward romantic drama with some great comedic highlights. A very touching and moving story. Has made me want to read Austen's books though.
