The Killing Reviews and Ratings

I put this off for awhile, cause I thought it would be dated. Big mistake. This film is way ahead of it's time and now I see it's obvious influence on todays films. It's very short compared to Kubrick's later projects, but the story is tight. One of the best endings ever. A ...( read more)must see for any movie buff.

Beautiful tension, beautifully lit, as if I needed more proof of Kubrick's genius.

Maurice: You have my sympathies, then. You have not yet learned that in this life you have to be like everyone else - the perfect mediocrity; no better, no worse. Individuality's a monster and it must be strangled in it's cradle to make our friends feel confident. You know, I've ...( read more)often thought that the gangster and the artist are the same in the eyes of the masses. They are admired and hero-worshiped, but there is always present underlying wish to see them destroyed at the peak of their glory.

A great film noir from Stanley Kubrick. Its a familiar story involving a heist gone wrong, but the way it has been made is what makes it effective, along with the final twenty minutes, which are fucking awesome.

Sterling Hayden, among others, stars as a career criminal on his last big score, involving an expertly planned heist at a racetrack. This particular heist will employ the work of many, all with their own parts to play. The first half is setup, the second half is the heist.

The camera work, the structure, and the dialog are all expertly handled here. True to Kubrick form, their are long tracking shots, along with some tricky setups that are well done. The structure is non-linear, which is appropriate for describing the roles of the various people involved, and has clearly served as influence for among others, Tarantino, not to mention several other moments that have been clearly used in other films. Then you have the dialog, which is fast paced and perfectly modeled after old pulp novels.

I'll again mention the ending, which is awesome. The way everything plays out completely pulled me in, and that's all I'll say about that. Very well done.

Johnny Clay: You'd be killing a horse - that's not first degree murder, in fact it's not murder at all, in fact I don't know what it is.

Classic noir thriller. Any heist flick you've ever seen owes this great film a huge debt.

This was a great classic Kubrick film about a bank robbery gone wrong. Sterling Hayden is marvelously tough as the leader of the group and Elisha Cook Jr. as jittery and great as ever as the husband of the femme fatale. I'm a big fan of film-noir and this film is one of the great...( read more) efforts in that genre of heightened shadows, moral ambiguity and sexual motivation.

This movie is all around great. Plenty of memorable moments and fun to watch. The movie gets real crazy really fast.

meticulous, tightly-woven nonlinear plotline years ahead of its time. some of the narration seemed a little unnecessary, but the camerawork and sound synchronization from point of view to point of view was brilliant. the ending is especially poetic because all the taut structur...( read more)e and intense planning literally blows haphazardly away in the wind. excellent film.

    Flawless early Kubrick.

Second official Kubrick's feature, "The Killing" is a decent noir starring Sterling Hayden as a tough, highly motivated ex-con who sets up a last bank heist before the classical settling down. Heavily influenced by John Huston's nicely done "Asphalt Jungle", "The Killing" is the ...( read more)first true proposition from Kubrick's catalog. An entertaining proposition.

The true treasure here is dialogue, delivered exactly how is suppose to be: smart-ass, fast, snappy and funny. 28 years-old Kubrick's direction is impressive here, just a year after his debut, "Killer's Kiss". The tempo of the plot is perfectly balanced with relations of the characters and even though non-linear storytelling takes away some of the tension, it's engaging till the end.

Why Kubrick decided to make this picture? It doesn't feel like a Kubrick's choice for a movie. Despite storytelling, there's nothing fresh in this story. What's more: when you want to make a movie, the last movie you want to make is a movie that everybody makes around you. Well, the best guess then would be that he simply wanted to make a picture formally fine, without any flaws, a picture that would be fun to watch from beginning to the end.

And that's exactly what it is.

Splendid film noir by Kubrick, The Killing is one of the best crime dramas i have seen, Kubrick's direction was superb and the movie was brilliantly acted. The Killing is utterly captivating with its supersonic pace.

Amazing direction.. This is how crime thrillers should be.. Short and sweet with no added fat on it..

This is scary. It is also probably the rarest Kubrick film.

Stanley Kubrick first "official" film is something of a curiosity. Light years ahead of its time (as Kubrick would be for most of his career), this film combined elements of 50's film noir and the upcoming post MPAA period that would explode in the 1970's. Sterling Hayden (one ...( read more)of the most underrated stars ever) turns in a sick performance as the brutal bank robber who will sacrifice anything and anyone to pull off the heist he has planned. The dialogue is pure 50's noir. The characters are pure 50's noir. But the sensibilities of how it is shot and put together flashes forward to an era filmmakers hadn't experienced yet. Quentin Tarantino's "Reservoir Dogs" has been compared to this film...and rightly so.

Impressed, but what else should I expect from Kubrick?

The final 20 minutes make the first hour worth it... Tarantino, eat your heart out: this is a dark caper movie, well-acted and to the point. Stark and stunning.

Damn badass, one of the best heist movies I've seen, very strange how the guys always get caught or have it all turned out bad but my heart was literally off the hook.

The first feature length outing for one of cinemas most poignant and identifiable directors proves to be a film of intrigue, class, entertainment and works as a fitting proclamation on the potentials of it's maker. The Killing is a tight piece of deception, mistrust, violence and...( read more) style, and in many ways acts as the sayonara to the atypical film noir as it gestures in the era of more provocative and experimental filmmaking.

What sets The Killing apart from many other pieces in this director's arsenal of variety comes through it's characterisation. The screenplay of the film involves much more dialogue than subsequent films of Kubrick, and through this we are given insight into the character's through the portrayal of the actor's, rather than the camera (as is the case with Kubrick's long winded style). However, what also sets The Killing apart from many other films in this genre is it's unwilling nature to adhere to a formal pacing and linear narrative. Time interchanges become entangled with cleverly written plot points and turns as we are thrust into the intermingling of entertainment with intricate concepts.

However, as different as this film may feel, it is still highly distinguishable as the work of Mr. Kubrick, handled through complex tracking shots and meticulous framing that assures itself in coaxing the audience to absorb the surroundings that these characters so oftenly interact with. Characters that create the perfect heist without a glitch gone wrong, but find the simplest of barriers blocking them all from the final prize. The film works well in noting the pitfalls of a pefectly capered plan - improvisation is a necessity as the planned checkpoints of any routine more often than not will be struck down due to the retaining mistrust between crew members.

If I were to make a top 10 list of cinema's greatest thrillers, this film would probably be on it. As far as structure goes, this is as solid as movies get, and Kubrick's directorial genius is as visible as ever. Completely incredible.
  • September 8, 2007
One of Kubrick's earlier films, but if you think it's only worthy as a curiosity piece, you'd be very much mistaken. 'The Killing' includes all of the factors that we are used to seeing in one of his films, and is a stylish little heist movie. The one thing that surprises more th...( read more)an any on watching this now is just how much of it Quentin Tarantino pinched for 'Reservoir Dogs', this movie supplying more than just the blueprint for that particular pop-culture classic. Early Kubrick. A poor schmuck takes part of a heist to satisfy his money hungry bitchy wife. A great crime film. It put Kubrick on the map. He attempts film noir with great results. Simple, smart and entertaining. Tarantino borrowed a thing or two from this early Kubrick film.

Stanley Kubrick is a landmark and example to filmmakers of how cinema should be done. Kubrick's 1956 crime drama "The Killing" is on point with any film of it's genre that can be done today. A definite contemporary flick! I saw this movie back in film school and was completely a...( read more)mazed how Kubrick created such an amazing crime flick. When watching this film you can see a sense of an early "Reservoir Dogs" being born. It's that type of billiance Kubrick brings to the table, and in all of his films aswell. In "The Killing' a group rounded up to make a "killing" in a heist at a racetrack, but ultimately the group is faced with problems within it's inner circle. The film is the grandfather to films like 'Reservoir Dogs" , "Scarface" and 'Pulp Fiction" It's film noir-ish style is a must see for the modern day lover of this genre. What I enjoyed from the film was how this group of criminals each have their own flavor and intensity. The usual suspects are all here, the muscle, the brains, the worry wart, the sniper and the head. It's pretty cool that this film was made in 1956 and still manages to get your attention. This film will never get remade.
