The Killing Reviews and Ratings

If I were to make a top 10 list of cinema's greatest thrillers, this film would probably be on it. As far as structure goes, this is as solid as movies get, and Kubrick's directorial genius is as visible as ever. Completely incredible.

One of Kubrick's earlier films, but if you think it's only worthy as a curiosity piece, you'd be very much mistaken. 'The Killing' includes all of the factors that we are used to seeing in one of his films, and is a stylish little heist movie. The one thing that surprises more th...( read more)an any on watching this now is just how much of it Quentin Tarantino pinched for 'Reservoir Dogs', this movie supplying more than just the blueprint for that particular pop-culture classic. Way ahead of its time.

Early Kubrick. A poor schmuck takes part of a heist to satisfy his money hungry bitchy wife. The beauty of the film is that you have no idea how they are going to conduct the plan until it unrolls before your eyes, cleverly showing every participant's role. Aside from feeling a b...( read more)it dated (the narration is really corny) it is a very solid suspense with one of the most outrageous ending I've seen.

A great crime film. It put Kubrick on the map. He attempts film noir with great results. Simple, smart and entertaining. Tarantino borrowed a thing or two from this early Kubrick film.

Stanley Kubrick is a landmark and example to filmmakers of how cinema should be done. Kubrick's 1956 crime drama "The Killing" is on point with any film of it's genre that can be done today. A definite contemporary flick! I saw this movie back in film school and was completely a...( read more)mazed how Kubrick created such an amazing crime flick. When watching this film you can see a sense of an early "Reservoir Dogs" being born. It's that type of billiance Kubrick brings to the table, and in all of his films aswell. In "The Killing' a group rounded up to make a "killing" in a heist at a racetrack, but ultimately the group is faced with problems within it's inner circle. The film is the grandfather to films like 'Reservoir Dogs" , "Scarface" and 'Pulp Fiction" It's film noir-ish style is a must see for the modern day lover of this genre. What I enjoyed from the film was how this group of criminals each have their own flavor and intensity. The usual suspects are all here, the muscle, the brains, the worry wart, the sniper and the head. It's pretty cool that this film was made in 1956 and still manages to get your attention. This film will never get remade.

Loaded with great dialogue and quirky characters, The Killing stands out above most Caper / film Noir films that ive watched.
Kubrick does a fine job, as always, and The Killing ranks up there with his best.

Typical Stanley Kubrick even though it was probably one of his first movies, it defiantly shows his style developing, nothing works out in a Stanley Kubrick movie

    KILLING?!?! Say it's not so!
  • April 28, 2007
Kubrick's first feature with a killer professional cast, first class production values and an ambitious plot that is top notch caper/noir all the way. Long live Marie Windsor and Elijah Cook. The film made Kubrick.

    stanley kubrick first masterpiece
  • March 22, 2007
One of the two main influences on Reservoir Dogs. This is Kubrick's third foray into feature film directing, and although a bit aged, is still great today. Very fast-paced for a 50s movie, and, though not as good as Kubrick's later works, well worth a watch.
  • March 20, 2007
Interesting heist movie with a good old twist!
  • March 1, 2007
    One of Kubrick's earliest films.
  • February 24, 2007
A Thriller at those times with such a screenplay & direction, hatsoff..
  • January 21, 2007
Tight, tense, brilliantly told crime noir. In terms of the chronology of the story this is a movie way ahead of it's time, obviously inspiring the likes of Tarantino and Reservoir Dogs. Truly excellent early Kubrick.
  • January 15, 2007
undeniably among the greatest film-noirs ever, hayden in his best role, kubrick is as always very deep and has the true sense of cinema, all around wonderful acting and script as well, a sure-fire classic
  • December 26, 2006
Watch this and THEN tell me Tarantino's not a hack.
  • December 10, 2006
I don't really have anything positive to say about this movie, so I will just leave it at that.
  • December 6, 2006
Kubrick doing the noir thing in a completely fresh and compelling fashion. Sterling Haydon is excellent.
  • November 16, 2006
Would there ever have been a Reservoir Dogs without this film?
  • November 11, 2006
Very cool. Non-linear story telling before non-linear became the norm. Tarantino owes pretty much his whole career to movies like this.
  • October 13, 2006
Kubrick imitates Hitchcock and he does it perfectly! One of his first movies and also one of his best!
  • October 10, 2006
Another Kubrick I really should have seen a long time ago. Brilliantly constructed this has so much going for it, but most of all the immense pleasure in watching the plot establish and unravel.
  • October 4, 2006
    Brilliant film noir.
