a masterpiece of a movie. tells a story of preoccupation afghanistan and gives a glimpse of their life style and culture. its also a story about the friendship of these two boys and how their friendship is revived by simply acknowledging the past mistakes and starting a new begining.
The movie did live up to the hype surrounding it....though not without its flaws either. The Kite Runner did a great job of demonstrating the rigid social-economic class system that Afghanistan has (along with many "third-world countries") and how, unfortunately, it gets instilled in kids even at a young age. The movie clearly makes a statement not only about the upper classes and their lack of action and silence with injustices towards the less fortunate...but subtly (maybe a bit TOO subtle) placing it within the historic context, identifying the "first-world" countries that stand by and watch the USSR devastate a country only to later be taken over by the Taliban. Another great scene was later in the movie in the orphanage when the protagonist goes to Afghanistan.
Though the movie gets a little too sugar coated at times....and I had to allow a lot of suspension of disbelief that anyone could enter Taliban controlled areas with a fake beard and not get caught and likely killed or worse...
The film could've been a more pointed in the critiques it was making...the redemption theme is fine (that was the point of the movie), though probably was a little too light-handed in the portrayal of the social ills committed by the characters...it felt a little too cheap in the end, too sugary. Otherwise this would've been a 5 star film...
I'm a little taken aback by some rating of 1/2 or 1 star...yes I had my gripes, but we're talking a Hollywood movie here, a work of fiction, I could not expect it to push all the right buttons and be hypercritical of the central themes presented. It's a wonderful film, tender in its portrayal of two kids at opposite ends of the social spectrum, and then silently brutal in the cruelty "the system" allowing the privileged to have their way with the poorer classes.
A must see movie. Great story about 2 young boys living in Afghanistan just before the Soviet Union's invasion. The two are close friends, but after an incident takes place, their lives are changed for ever. Years latter the one boy, now an adult living in the U.S., must return to his homeland to repay a debt to his old childhood friend.
I HAVENT READ THE BOOK YET BUT IF ITS BETTER THAN THE MOVIE , WELL I GOTTA ITS A GREAT BOOK BECAUSE THE MOVIE WAS PRETTY DECENT.THUMBS UP FOR THE KIDS ACTING :)
The beautiful world of fairytales clashes with the brutality of modern Afganistan, whilst relationships are tested when our protagonists are asked to stand up and fight for them. THe actors are brilliant, the direction is solid, the story seemed a bit patchy at times.
Heartbreaking and beautiful, this is a movie that's an amazing, faithful adaptation of the movie but also painfully uncomfortable at times and therefore difficult to recommend. However, if you do end up watching this movie, you'll be glad that you did.
pretty nice adaptation of best-selling novel with the same title .. indeed, still better if u read the novel first .. touching n lots of values here ..
Years after fleeing the Taliban and immigrating to the United States, an Afghan man returns to his war-ravaged homeland to try to repay his debt to a childhood friend whose trust he betrayed. This movie has a lot of boring endless talk scenes that are subtitled. Watch this one only if you are desperate for a movie to watch.
Good adaptation of the novel. Actually, it was too good at times: some parts of the story weren't that necessary for the understanding of the plot and made the film feel like it was in slow motion at times. Nevertheless, it still is a remarkable story about love, friendship and living with your regrets.
The beautiful Afghani settings, the enjoyable kite running sequences and the fresh multilingual cast can not make up for the terrible lead performance, the sketchy plot transitions and the overall Hollywood whitewash feeling.
I read the book and i just can't stand the thought of going through it again with images. I found the book interesting on a culture level but never did find the main character redeeming.
This novel is one of my favorites. I was a little bit dissapointed that the deep emotional issues Amir went through weren't portrayed very well. However I still thoroughly enjoyed the movie.
A sneaky epic about two best friends in Afghanistan, this film clings to simpler ideals rather than taking the show-boating route of becoming a political commentary on the current situation in the middle east. It tip toes across the line and brings across its own meaning, without getting needlessly lost in controversy.
A first rate film about the power of friendship and what lengths a person will go to to honor a friend.Based on an incredible true story and it shows what Afghanistan was like before and after the Russian invasion.
If you're a devout christian or you're just... religious. BLOCK YOUR EARS.
JESUS FUCKING CHRIST. What is this??
I thought I was going to die of boredom. I mean don't get me wrong here. I read the novel, loved it, read it once more, adored it and vowed to marry it. BUT THIS FILM SUCKS.
I can't even be critical here. This just sucks, sucks, sucks, sucks.
They should've just left it as a novel. WHY ruin it all with this piece of crap??
Sad, but moving movie. There are some hard things to watch in this movie, but the ending is beautiful as is the underlying meaning of the true friendship.
The movie seemed to be almost surprisingly mellow until at some point it became harsh. It is emotional but not too evidently. It is also quite long. Some overdramatic scenes can be noted too. Still it's refreshingly out of the road of mainstream and leaves a feeling that this film was made because the story has to be told and not because of the money and tears of the masses.
It's a very interesting story placed in a world hardly accessible to the Europeans, yet a world i was happy to discover! The story of a great friendship ( challenged by vanity and misunderstanding but a story to last in time) between two little friends! Definitely a movie worth seeing!
