I really enjoyed this film, Forest Whitaker's performace is outstanding. Although, personally I'd have rathered if there had been less of a ficticious side to the film. McAvoy's role gives you a view into Idi Amin's personal life, but there were probably other ways that could h...( read more)ave been done. Nevertheless, a great film!

Wow Forrest Whitaker was awesome in this movie
  • October 21, 2009
This illustrated both the persuasiveness and atrocities of Ugandan dictator Amin without hiding the bonking of Scottish doctor Garrison from whose point-of-view this movie is viewed from.

i liked this but i would have been easier for me to follow if i knew a bit more about the subject, so may have 2 watch it again after doing some reading
  • October 18, 2009
Whitaker is amazing, at turns charming and scary!! McAvoy is very good too as the naive doctor who realizes his flaws and the horrors he has had a hand in much too late.

Konacno ga pogledah..

I can't say I'm James McAvoy's biggest fan but Whitaker's fantastic performance and MacDonald's brilliant direction made this a very enjoyable film. I'm not a big fan of the fiction element of the film though, I would have rather seen a film that was 100% factual.

this is probably the most enthralling biopic i ever seen,.instead of becoming boring like any other biopic,.this movie just go full throttle intense, especially in the last 30 minutes
  • August 13, 2009
seen it,and i was on edge the whole time but only Hung in there because of James McAvoy.
  • August 13, 2009
Forrest Whitaker is absolutely amazing, McAvoy is great and the rest of the cast make the movie believable. The photo is also really good if not the best I've ever seen.

But of course the story is perhaps the most important of it all. The movie has a special tone that isn't too ...( read more)obvious depicting a time when 300'000 people were killed. Because this is a portrait of Idi Amin and how Garrigan is entangled by this man, how he can be kept as his advisor without noticing everything going on and it's effective.

The film is predicable towards the end when it turns into more of a thriller with a more gritty approach. But the predicability is part of the message, a part of most dictators and other people with too much power. It's very well shown from beginning to end how both Amin and Garrigan change.

The ending is spot on with enough of an opening but no untied threads.

What little I can say what wasn't perhaps on par with the other stuff in the movie is this: there are some brutal moments in the movie but they feel so detached from the rest of the story that is all about rock'n'roll - and so little time is spent building it up - that I didn't feel the punch in the stomach that I had expected.

I could have perhaps taken in a little more facts about the time without ruining the experience. I "wanted"/expected to feel worse and more like after watching "Hotel Rwanda" - how could the world let this happen? But this movie, in trying to show the detachment from the rest of the world and for Garrigan from the rest of the country.

But these things I have to think to come up with and that I'd like to know more about the couple of doctors also in Uganda and he has NO contact with his parents?

What makes me like it so much is the same thing that make it impossible to give it five stars in a sense - I actually enjoy watching it! That feels weird.

    F-ing amazing.

I can't believe I waited almost 3 years to finally see this movie. I've had it on dvd for about 2 years now which makes it even worse that I waited so long, because this movie is absolutely great. I wouldn't say it's fantastic, but it's damn close. I think the problem with the...( read more) movie lies solely on the fact that you don't really get to know the kind of man that Idi Amin can be until, maybe, an hour or so in the movie and by then the movie is already halfway over and not that I have a real problem with that since I think this approach worked to a certain degree, because I think that this approach helped sort of humanize Idi Amin a little and it helped you see that, until someone betrayed him, he was a pretty charismatic and charming guy. This is a movie that's about the strength of its acting. It might not tell the best of stories (it's good but not great), but its great acting sure makes the movie great. Obviously most of the praise HAS to be directed at Forest Whitaker (whom I still consider insanely underrated even IF he won a ton of awards for this movie). His performance is the kind of performance that people talk about for years and I assumed (without seeing the special features, which confirmed my assumption) that Forest Whitaker WAS Idi Amin both on and off screen. I think that's where the strength of his performance lies, he really became Idi Amin. He was powerful, he had a commanding screen presence which is something a president should have and Forest Whitaker had that and then some. Also Forest Whitaker was just absolutely fucking terrifying as Idi Amin, I think he was terrifying because you never knew what he was going to do and (as mentioned in the special features) you never knew when he was joking or being serious if he threatened to kill you. He was just so paranoid about people betraying him. All in all, Forest Whitaker's performance is a sight to behold. Also the last 20-30 minutes were absolutely fantastic, FANTASTIC I tell you and if the rest of the movie had been like those last 20-30 minutes, this would probably one of the greatest films I'd ever seen. But alas it's not that way, but it's still a really damn great film and a must see because of Forest Whitaker and his powerhouse performance.

This is both a powerful examination of a horrific time and an adrenaline-filled thriller with a healthy dose of wry humour. Forest Whitaker is tremendous and fully deserved his Oscar, while James McAvoy turns in a typically strong and at times intense performance

Amazing. Such a powerful movie. It was so tense, and amazingly paced. I loved pretty much everything about it. Nicholas Garrigan: "You're a child. That's ...( read more)what makes you so fucking scary", probally my favourite quote as it did sum up this man, his mood swings and character did reflect this idea.
i think what has shocked me the most about this film is how it is based on a true events which i find hard to come to terms with. this film had me on edge of my seat and biting my finger nails the whole way through. if you like films that tell you as it is watch this one!
