Groundbreaking horror that opened the door for films like Night of the Living Dead.

Robert Morgan: [filling up a bag with stakes] How many more of these will I have to make before they're all destroyed? They want my blood. Their lives are mine. I still get squeamish.

A quality film version of Richard Matheson's novel, I Am Legend. Probably the closest to the a...( read more)ctual source material, more so than the Will Smith version and the Charlton Heston version for sure.

Vincent Price (an awkward casting choice, but who doesn't love him anyway) stars as the Last living human on earth. After the world has been devastated by a plague, Dr. Robert Morgan (Price) spends the days searching around town for supplies and killing the remaining inhabitants of the world, Vampires.

Robert Morgan: I can't afford the luxury of anger. Anger can make me vulnerable. It can destroy my reason and reason's the only advantage I have over them.

There is a lengthy backstory in the film that, despite dragging the film down, explains what has happened, and develops Price's character pretty well. It certainly helps that the films production, shot in black and white, with numerous shots of isolation, provide the film with a decent mood. The way in which this film was handled actually provided inspiration for Romero's Night of the Living Dead.

There are some campy moments, but this film is still pretty well handled.

Robert Morgan: You're freaks! I'm a man! The last man...

Overlooked by many for the great little flick it is, The Last Man on Earth introduces Vincent Price as a hunter of vampire-zombies. Fun, entertaining, and surprisingly moving, it's a gem that many seem to miss.

He does an amazing job interacting with bascially nothing. Price's great screen presence helps to offset the obvious low budget of the film and even during the slower moments. Black and white photography helps on the atmospheric strangle hold and tight camera-work gives the film a cramp appeal of torment and despair within its beautiful Rome-shot setting masquerading as America. The saucy score spins out the chills and adds to the suspenseful spurts and persistent images by director Sidney Salkon. However, and thanks to the talents of Matheson and Price, they crafted one of the most important horror films of history.

The best adaptation of Matheson's apocalyptic novel. Vincent Price is as good as always, this time in a more contained role. the overall mood is effective, austere and creepy.

Great classic horror film. A definite must see for any horror fan.

I guess this is the first of three movies based on the book I am Legend, about a deadly virus that kills everyone on earth and then turns them to vampires...I have never read the book but saw the movie with Will Smith and got curious about watching the older versions. This one ...( read more)is interesting because it is said George Romero was inspired to make Night of the Living Dead because of this movie. I will also watch another version-The Omega Man with Charlton Heston. These are dark depressing movies but interesting nonetheless. This one with Vincent Price was ok...the acting was pretty bad and the voices coming out of some of the mouths didn't match up and looked dubbed. The story was good and kept my interest but some of the other elements just made it ok.

A film well worth watching. The first of three attemps to turn "I Am Legend", by Richard Matheson to film. Not perfect, but good. As always, Vincent Price does a wonderful job with the role and thus makes the film work.
