The Last Samurai is an excellent movie.

It's about an American who embraces the Samurai culture and fights against his own country. The script does something that most epics fail to do: Make the story understandable. The viewer can understand what's happening and not be confused.

Tom Cruise gives another great performance as the American chief Nathan Algren. He starts off a depressed alcoholic and becomes the fierce soldier that he once was. Ken Watanabe also gives a great performance as the samurai leader Katsumoto. He becomes the character with fierce tenacity and intensity, but also with warmth and respect. They have great chemistry together.

Great cinematography, art direction, and costume designs. Good visual effects every once in a while. Brilliant battle scenes.

    OVERALL: Excellent film

Despite Tom Cruise being the last Samurai. Somewhat offended like Paul Mooney. But I don't dis like Cruise.
Anyways it worked out well. Seeing how they're cultures differed so much he decides to go with the Samurai. Honorable clan thought fought to the very end.

Tear shedding movie for myself. First seeing the son die then all of them get wasted at the end was a very touching scene. Movie also may get a person amped like myself. When they took out the first line of attack while they were having entertainment.

I liked the rhythm of the movie - nice and peaceful during the time when Algren lived in the village

    True harmony
and equal balance of humans - co existing with nature

wouldn't it be great to live like that

too bad there aren't that many villages like that around nowadays

I found the ending to be quite strange having Tom Cruise surviving the last battle
but the part when he approached the emperor of japan was very touching

Do you like History? Martial arts? Tom Cruise? How did YOU miss this movie?!!SUPERB script, beautiful lit filming (extreme care went into the making of this incredible story line.....) American History (post civil war 1870's) meets Japanese emperor!! Capt Algren (Tom Cruise) is less than honorable BEFORE his negotiated (paid) trip to Japan...The Samaurai are to be respected!! ****** 6 stars

As a film heavily critisized for historical inacurracies and a romance that wasn't really needed, The Last Samurai succeeds at showcasing the beauty of late 19th century Japan and the ways of Bushido. Don't see the movie for Tom Cruise (who is excellent in his role as the tormented Nathan Algren)see it for Ken Watanabe's excellent performance and Hans Zimmer's beaitufl score.

"Never let the facts get in the way of a good story" applies here.

This was great, the action sequences actually lasted a good hearty amount of time, with severed heads and mortal wounds a-plenty.
