In this rather grim Italian crime drama, set in a Sicilian fishing village, a conniving gangster tries to keep his son from marrying by seducing his young fiancee. Later the poor girl is so ashamed, she kills herself. Meanwhile, a plucky but impoverished peasant girl tries to earn money for her dowry by organizing a ring of youthful pickpockets. She plans on marrying a certain engineer and is not tempted by the lustful men who constantly make advances at her.
