Jonathan Rosenbaum, Chicago Reader
A stiff.
-
Derek Adams, Time Out
... the effects and sets are marvellously fantastical and there are one or two neat comical allusions to the heroes' literary roots. But where's the excitement, the thrills, the tension, the style?
-
Charles Taylor, Salon.com
Despite Sean Connery and some impressive 19th century gloom, this big-screen translation of Alan Moore's culty comic-book series falls to earth with an incoherent splat.
-
Ed Park, Village Voice
Even if, per Wilde, all art is quite useless, it need not be quite as useless as this.
-
Richard Roeper, Ebert & Roeper
This film is odd, loud, unintentionally funny and quite awful.
-
Desson Thomson, Washington Post
This isn't a blend of modern and classic so much as a collision.
-
Nell Minow, Common Sense Media
Enough deaths here for a more restrictive rating.
-
Felix Vasquez Jr., Cinema Crazed
Despite giant lapses in logic and time period inaccuracies, turn off your common sense, sit back and enjoy this entertaining, adventurous, bright, action-packed tale with solid performances from its immensely talented cast.
-
Urban Cinefile Critics, Urban Cinefile
Without a strong, juicy villain -- one that we love to hate -- the film lacks an important ingredient.
-
Mark Halverson, Sacramento News & Review
This grouping of extraordinary egos brushes against the personality flaws and clashes that initially make the film intriguing, but then the film slips into a special-effects extravaganza with a monstrous, rampaging Mr. Hyde headlining.
-
Joe Lozito, Big Picture Big Sound
Easily one of the worst films I've ever seen.
-
James Plath, Movie Metropolis
Sean Connery is the only one who commands our attention.
-
Daniel Eagan, Film Journal International
So little of real consequence is at stake that you'll have plenty of time to notice how the names on not one but two tombstones are misspelled.
-
Danny Graydon, Empire Magazine
No matter how troubled the shoot was, the movie was shanghaied from the off, courtesy of Hollywood's dependence on market-defined 'success'.
-
Kevin Carr, Film Threat
The problem with The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen is the filmmakers tried to give everyone a main storyline and ended up diluting everything.
-
Jason Zingale, Bullz-Eye.com
This one isn't for everyone, but it's still good in my book.
-
Ethan Alter, NYC Film Critic
The League is a project that was doomed from the moment the studio threw out Alan Moore comic and decided that they knew better.
-
Louis-Jérôme Cloutier, Panorama
Quelques moments sont légèrement mieux et même intéressants, mais dans l'ensemble, vous allez complètement gaspiller votre argent et votre temps avec ce film.
-
Steve Crum, Kansas City Kansan
Just don't think too much between the super battles. This is, after all, very comic book.
-
Tony Medley, tonymedley.com
Repugnant.

A mind-blowing and adrenaline-pumping action-packed adventure with great special effects, great story, great characters and non-stop fun that fuel this sensational film. Sean Connery proves he can still save the day. A great and exceptional cast of talents. An incredibly fun and ultra thrilling movie. An exhilarating and breathtaking thrill-machine from start to finish. You will love it. It`s The Avengers of the 19th century with some of the most mesmerizing heroes, villains and anti-heroes of their time, and coming to our time with awesome force. A tremendously exciting good time that deserves a look or two.

I really really wanted to like this movie, but somehow it turned out super-boring, kind of confusing , and poorly held together.

The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen is easily one of the worst big budget action movies ever made and just an all around terrible movie. It has interesting elements and qualities that make it watchable, but for the most part it's just all bad. The most obvious flaw is the almost inconceivably excessive use of CGI. Not good CGI or even decent for 2003 CGI, but made for tv CGI that plagues the screen. Then you have the terrible writing, direction, acting and an illogical sense of placing fictional characters in the same world together. Very little time was put into making this even slightly fun or admirable. Whoever was behind the camera had no idea what they were doing. The cinematography is almost laughable and it's surrounded with bad lighting. I feel like i'm only scratching the surface of why this movie is bad, but I think it's basically common knowledge that this sucks. I think the only part I whole-heartedly like is the Jekyll and Hyde aspect; for some reason it just really works and Jason Flemyng is great. I was sadly one of the many who was tricked into watching this movie back when it was released and upon multiple viewings it just becomes more and more obvious how much I don't like this and think it's everything an action movie shouldn't be.

Not as great as the trailer shows. It's kinda cheesy.
-
As a fan of the graphic novel, this was a huge disappointment. Completely miscast, the writing is horrendous, the effects are terrible. A complete bomb.
-
It is pretty enjoyable, but it's a bit flat on the plotline!
-
Poor old Alan Moore. No wonder he disassociated himself from Watchman!
-
a good attempt at a superhero movie, though slightly underdone.

It also has a dark gothic Victorian feel to it which is lovely, the problem is the story is crap, its completely stupid and makes no sense and even though its a fantasy comic book adaptation, certain things are soooo ludicris its just laughable, a massive submarine able to cruise down the canals in Venice, and fitting under those tiny arch bridges lol and I mean massive submarine.

It begins with a rather impressive list of literary characters played by a formidable cast of up-and-coming actors and one very established favorite, Sean Connery. An impressive cast gathered for what could have been a stronger film. The story, fictional heroes and villains teamed together to battle an enemy of mother England, has great potential. And therein lies the problem with the film, it is great potential wasted as too many under established professionals attempt to step outside their comfort zones.
Thirty minutes into the film you've been introduced to all the characters and a complicated story of intrigue is about to develop. Unfortunately this is where things get drawn out, cheesy and just plain forgettable. By the end it's a cliché action-adventure with a creative group that ends up trying too hard. For instance, the special effects team goes over-the-top in creating a comparable foe for Hyde ruining the impressive work done up to then. By concentrating more on story, the filmmaker and his team could have had more pride in creative characters without the crutch of special effects.
As I write this I still have twinge of interest in the literary characters brought to life for me once again. If a sequel were proposed they would need to go back to the drawing board rather than trying to improve upon what's been started.

This movie wasn't bad as I thought before... I think it's pretty cool having Sean Connery to lead a group of people with extraordinary abilities to face the enemy who wants to start the World War... The story given in this movie was okay, not too great, but not bad... At least I entertained with that, even it's not pump my adrenaline... The twist given in this story was pretty work I think... Last word, it's cool movie that entertains a lot, only the title of this movie that makes me questioning myself a lot, how can they name this movie 'Gentleman' if they have a woman inside the league??

Is it great? No. Is it fun. Yes. I've never read the graphic novel and I probably never will. Suck on that fanboys

The British government engage the services of a group of adventurers each with their own special powers to foil a plot to cause a world war. Yet another effects laden blockbuster based on a graphic novel, The League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen is a little different because of its roots in classic literature. Each character is based on those featured in the works of Jules Verne, Bram Stoker, Oscar Wilde and the like and does so with varying success. Connery's Alan Quartermain is a fun cross between Henry Jones Junior and Senior, Townsend's Dorian Gray is dashingly amoral and Captain Nemo is reinvented as a martial artist in command of some spectacularly designed art deco retro technology. Mr Hyde however is some kind of shaved prosthetic gorilla with a personality disorder, the lady vampire's relevance is tenuous and turning Tom Sawyer into a secret agent seemingly for the sole purpose of making the hero an American just daft. But some of the effects are very well done, the action is breathless and it doesn't take itself too seriously, making it a decent popcorn fueled firework display of the cinematic fire and forget kind.

Not exactly perfect, but it's a fun movie with interesting visuals and a nice cast.

Extraordinarily retarded, even for comic book standards.

This movie gets a horrible rep...from the moment it debuted it's taken quite a beating, but I really enjoyed it. It's taken from the comics and has a neat premise featuring a group of "heroes" taken from classic literature. The cast is good and has a good mix of story and action in it, especially when Nemo starts kicking everyone's ass like he's owed money. Connery is great as Quatermain, a man who has been portrayed countless times over the years in cinema but the former Bond does the best job. Not near as bad as it's been made out to be.
-
Disappointing. Too many characters to follow. Poor storyline.
-
...and the game is on!
Just watched this for the second time, and I was way too generous in my first review. This film is terrible and diserves it's reputation.
-
Better than what most people said about it.
