If you are a fan of the short running British comedy series 'League of Gentlemen' then you will already know that this is the film that concluded the League's decade long career of comedy together. The League are: Steve Pemberton, Mark Gatiss, Reece Shearsmith and Jeremy Dyson. The former of the three appear as 90% of the characters within the show, set in the bizarre, and often sinister, fictional town of Royston Vasey. The plot isn't as simple as the episodes of the show, though it certainly isn't as sinister. It's funny, entertaining, original and clever: when the characters of Royston Vasey discover that their world is about to end they find a way into our real world to track down their creators and put a stop to their cancellation. Genius! Cue all your favourite characters: Edward and Tubbs, Geoffrey Tipps, Hilary Briss and, of course, Papa Lazarou, interacting in the most outrageous way with the actors and writers that portray them. This film no doubt makes more sense having seen the series, but it stands on its own as a fantastic comedy that is certainly worth a look.
not many television programmes go on to make a decent movie but i thought that they did a pretty good job with the league of gentleman i mean it was funny had the characters and was just like a big episode with a few twists here and there
but it could have been alot better that it was but not bad though
It's not the measure of the first two series, but better than the third. And it's totally f***ed up in a rather inspired way! It almost reminded me of Time Bandits in places, which is no bad thing.
Formed on an utterly woeful idea, this is clear evidence that Shearsmith and co had well and truly run out of ideas by the time they came to write this.
i love the league of gentlemens very dark and twisted humour. i have no idea why it has taken me so long to watch this film of one of my favorite TV shows, but it was as funny as id expected and as twisted. If you have never seen the TV show watch that first, then this...your in for a treat.
I heard it's not that good, but I want to see it just cuz it's got both Michael Sheen (in eyeliner!) *and* David Warner (er, in a toilet ... talk about apocalypse, I didn't think he could stoop any lower than "Loving Deadly" or "Ice Cream Man" or "Unnameable II" or .... Oh well, if could suffer through those, I can suffer through this; it must be love.)
I've only recently become introduced to the residents of royston vasey a few months ago, being from a somewhat small and inbred town in the south does not take away from the slighty bizarre and inbred northerners portrayed in the film. If your not a fan of the original series then this film might be a bit hard to follow; after discovering that they are in fact fictional characters geoff - the local idiot, herr lipp - the walking german innuendo and hillary briss - the murderous butcher are sent into the real world to find out why their creators are getting rid of them and what follows is one of the best television to film transitions i've seen in a long while. its obvious that The League throughly enjoyed the change and lack of creative restaints (which they probably suffered routinely at the BBC); the notion of 3 of reece shearsmiths characters appearing in one frame together is screen gold and the laughs do come thick and fast - you can tell that the creators are film enthusiasts with tasty titbits like "Shelly Winters". Like the televsion show however its for the more desering pallet, but it highlights how the creators chose to do something rather outlandish and extremely interesting with their charcters rather then send them to a holiday resort- the stop motion creatures are something of a higlight as well, although looking cartoony they fit right in with the feel and dynamic of the film and make you wonder why the evil genius chose the one with glasses for the creatures eyes... Although the film was transefered to such a large scale it does not shy away from its humble television roots with cameos from simon pegg, peter kay and more creme of british comedy talent and it in the end has everyone asking "what actually is a humunculus?"
I know some people slated the film, saying it wasn't a wise move to make, but I think it is genius, the writing is great as always with the League, and kudos to the producer who had to schedule the shooting as it must have been a nightmare! One of my favourite films ever!
well this is one fantastic film!i love it!its just got this mindless but smart plot and hilariously irreverent characters!i have been watching thier show for years and i must say they've topped themselves with this fantastic british film!not for all peoples sense of humour!
Once again a British TV show that was fantastic in half hour segments completely misses the mark. This is quite possibly the worst one of all. The writers may have thought they were being clever with their writing but instead it is just complicated and ridiulously stupid. There isn't a single laugh to be had, the only times I did laugh were forced. The League Of Gentlemen is reduced to fart, poo and other toilet humour. However they present it in such a crude manner it isn't funny. in fact Freddy Got Fingered had more laughs than this film.
Didn't expect much of this. The series was great and this was never going to live up to it. However that's not to say it's bad, I mean these guys are amazing writers and performers and it's difficult to trash anything they do. Some of my favourite characters (Edward, Tubbs and the guy whose name I can't spell "Hello Dave!") Interesting story and an ok adaption to the big screen but you should probably watch the TV series first. This is just an side story to the creepy genius of the League.
Incredibly inventive, unpredictable and funny as fook. Takes some getting into and some of the jokes fall flat (mostly the toilet humour) but it's good fun. Probably not easy to follow for people who haven't seen the show.
