Critic Reviews

Felix Vasquez Jr., Cinema Crazed
A retread of "The Fox and the Hound"...
-
Tim Brayton, Antagony & Ecstasy
An ineffective sequel in the two ways that are most important: it does not live up to the original's visual legacy, and it does not expand the characters or setting in a meaningful or consistent way.
-
James Plath, Movie Metropolis
Simply put, we've seen it all before.
-
Forrest Hartman, Reno Gazette-Journal
Better than countless animated films that have received big-screen releases.
-
Walter Chaw, Film Freak Central
Born of a desire to make money off of children who don't know any better and their indulgent parents who should.

While the first Lion King was what re-established Disney as a great studio, and it became a classic of the company, this sequel was pointless, unnecessary and overall stupid. This was clearly made to make a buck on the stature of the original film, and it was clear that there was no thought into how to would make an effective, fun and memorable sequel to The Lion King. There was absolutely nothing worth mentioning about this film, except it's a poorly written film with a boring, mediocre story. At least the animation is nice as usual; unfortunately the film has no substance for its plot. The first Lion King was a great film, but this sequel simply fails because of a poor story and an unconvincing cast. I know it's all animated, but the voice actors seem bored here, and the film just fails in terms of continuing the story of the first. Stick with the first film and avoid this film because there is nothing to please fans of the first film. If only there would have been more effort into making this film. The end result is a mediocre film that fails to be fun and entertaining. Just because it's a Disney film, doesn't necessarily mean it's good. The Lion King 2 Simba's Pride is a missed opportunity to make a good sequel to a great film. This film is mediocre and doesn't stand out, which is a shame because because The Lion King was such a great film for people of all ages.

A boring and dumb sequel that should not have been made, but i loved it as a kid so kids might get a kick out of it.

Th song's are actually quite good. This film is so under rated, its better then anything disney have put out after 2004

The Lion King did not need a sequel, although it isn't horrible, this movie was just Disney's attempt to get more money from the story.

The biggest disappointment I had with this movie was the lack of animated maturity and sophistication that the first thrived with.
It's not so much the animation that I had a problem with but the story-boarding and color palettes. To any trained eye they're clearly sub-par and aimed at an audience who's accepting of TV animations.
Also, it would've helped to have a tighter script. Little things like the majesty of Mufasa's ghost or the credibility of Kovu and Kiara's romance were hindered by some sloppy dialogue.
All these things really diminish the reputation of the first and that, that's just a crime :/

All of the Lion Kings are amazing!

Not as good as the original "Lion King"; worth seeing Simba as an adult lion.

Remember at the end of Lion King when Scar's faithful followers were banished from the pride lands? No, of course you don't, because it never happened. However, the sequel needs to pull a plot out of its ass, so here we have Disney's Romeo and Juliet. Scar's apparent successor, that is no relation to Scar (to avoid shouts of "INCEST"), falls for Simba's daughter. It plays out exactly how you'd expect it to. The songs are absolute rejects, failing to have any beat or charm. The animation isn't too bad, but the colors seem bland and repetitive. Strange to hear what would later become the Pirates of the Caribbean theme, or at least it was very similar. The most ridiculous part is how incomplete the villain's scheming is. Scar was able to kill and become king because he was the rightful successor. Kovu isn't, so killing would just anger the pride lions. The end battle is a disappointment.

really good ending to the lion king story.

"Lion King II: Simba's Pride" might not be just like the original Lion King, but it's still a good movie. In this one, Simba has a daughter, Kiara, who will one day be the new princess. Some conflict arises when Kiara meets and grows fond of Kovu, a young cub from the Outsiders. Simba must find a way to deal with Kovu and the Outsiders who reign from Scar before something bad happens.
I think "Lion King II: Simba's Pride" should've premiered at the theatres because it is a good movie, and it probably would've been a big hit. It has a good story, good music, and it's almost as good as the original in my opinion. If you liked the original Lion King movie, I would definitely recommend getting this one. NOTE: That was my Amazon review from the year 2000, and I prefer this to the original.

I used to be against any Disney sequals, they're never as good and often the characters have different voices. The Lion King being my favourite Disney movie I was apprehensive about watching this but I really enjoyed it. All of the same voices were used (except for Zazu) and all of the characters from the first movie make an appearance at some point (except the hyenas). It wasn't as good as the first but it was a decent story and I did like the songs, 'We Are One' =) still love Simba =). After this I decided all Disney sequels are worth a watch even if I end up not liking them mhmm.
