Plot: C.S. Lewis's beloved children's fantasy is as delicate as a Fabergé egg, and bringing it to film has tons of inherent risks. Faithfulness is not the problem in this live-action version from WonderWork...( read more read more... )s, but pacing most certainly is. This realization is poky at times when it should be absolutely riveting, and yet it manages to be diverting during sequences that are primarily set-up or exposition. Four young children travel through an attic wardrobe to the magical land of Narnia. There, the White Witch keeps it "always winter and never Christmas," but her rule is in jeopardy as the fabled lord of the land, a huge lion named Aslan, is rumored to have returned. Sadly, near the end of the film, it's almost possible to hear the production team debating just where to spend its cash. They gave it their all to create the lion Aslan but had to settle for rudimentary animation for many of the truly magical creatures of Narnia. Suffice it to say, it's a nice try. --Keith Simanton

It's difficult to give this film a truly high rating because of it very poor animation and some poor voice acting (mainly from the children). That aside this is a superb adaptation of a classic. Somehow it really captures the tone and mood of the book in a way that it's big budget counterpart does not. It really seems to understand it's source material and despite omitting Father Christmas from the story it is a very faithful adaptation which leaves me with the same emotions that the book did.

Despite it's shortcomings this is a fab little film and far more rewarding than Disney's LORD OF THE RINGS wannabe.

Cartoon version of the story. Much more accurate than the 2005 version, but I prefer that to this still. Nice film, though.

Cheap animation, yes, but wonderfully spirited adaptation of the novel - and even though it edits out some stuff and changes the name of a character, it comes closer to the spirit of the book than the Disney version. ... Though I have to admit a certain bias: the version with US voice-over really grates (though I think it was done first) - the voices simply don't match the characters.

    SPOILER WARNING!
this might be for kids, but they probably cut out a lot of stuff, like Aslan's death

I lived on this as a kid. No idea if it's good today, but back then it was magical and scary in all the ways the latest live action one wasn't.

Since the synopsis is the wrong one for the picture, I'll be specific. I'm rating the CARTOON CoN. I HATE it. It was the only one my church would show to the kids- and it was no where near as good as the live-action Wonderworks version.

The scene on the rock still scares the ever-living daylights out of me now--even though it's a cartoon.

Don't care for cartoons, and the cartoonier they are, the less I want to see them. This looks pretty junky, judging from the VHS cover.

Not nearly as good as the more recent theatrical version, but this does have a playful charm that the younger children will like.

One of my favorites in spite of it's flaws. I know every word by heart. Little kids are obsessive (& so are the adults that love them)!

Spectacular and very well done. Lots of interesting motifs, symbols, and beautiful storytelling. For those who enjoy classical timeless tales, Narnia is way up there. ^^
