  This was the only short nominated for last year's Oscar that I watched. I read somewhere that this was supposed to be another segment in Fantasia but it was rejected for something else. I really wish it hadn't; it was amazing by itself, but together with other little segments it would've been stunning.

  This film was the last hourah of the Disney traditional hand draw animation studio (John Lasseter has since reestablished it and made The Princess and the Frog in 2009) and it egregiously was denied an Academy Award. The story has actually become a staple in animated short subject films (Disney had previously made one in the 40's) due to its impactful story of a cold little girl lighting matches to keep warm, all the while longing for more emotional warmth in her life. The story often has a bitterly cold ending like the feeling of a flame going out.
