This animated film brought the Disney company out of its long slump and you can see why it spurred a comeback: there is a lot to like in this movie.

It features outstanding animation: brilliant colors and beautiful scenes, along with interesting characters and pretty good songs. Frankly, I didn't care that much for the lead character, the young girl, but the little crab was the show- stealer, at least for me. He spoke with a West Indies accent and did a couple of cool musical numbers....and was easily the funniest and most-entertaining of all the characters.

I have only one major complaint about this story. The message that "parents should let the kids go," inferring they know best, that if you let them decide what is best, they'll live happily ever after....is irresponsible and just plain wrong. Hollywood loves to show little kids are smarter than their parents, which might sound nice to the young audience but it is a very dangerous message. Too bad, because than that this would have been a super film for all ages. It's still pretty darn good.

Is this the one where she has to stab the prince and turns into salt in the end? I hope so - five stars if it is! Bothered me when I was a kid but it's very good.

Loosely based upon the story by Hans Christian Andersen. Ariel, youngest daughter of King Triton, is dissatisfied with life in the sea. She longs to be with the humans above the surface, and is often caught in arguments with her father over those "barbaric fish-eaters". She goes to meet Ursula, the Sea Witch, to strike a deal, but Ursula has bigger plans for this mermaid and her father.

I saw this when I was little - it stays true to the real fairy tale and the mermaid dies at the end (she turns into foam)

my dad rented this for me when i stayed home sick once when i was 7. she turns to sea foam at the end of this movie. i can't recall if it was the flu that made me weepy, or if i really cried when she died. but i like this version better. it is a good memory.

Omigod, I never thought this version would be in this database! Disturbed me violently as a child, since it sticks to the original, suicidal story. Powerful stuff for an 8 year old...

If this is the gory and accurate telling of his story I'll watch it, but it probably isn't.

Why this was made after disney did a feature film makes no sense to me. A waste of time on the part of the animators.

For those of you who don't know, this version is NOT the dark anime one that was made in 1975. The little mermaid in that story had blonde hair and her name was Marina, this mermaids name is apparently, 'Miranda.'

It's understandable some people have gotten the two confused, but you might want to change your ratings. Here is the one you're probably looking for....

For some reason I highly doubt this version features the deal in which the mermaid must kill the prince with a magic knife and let his blood trickle onto her feet to be able to return to the ocean.

This cover looks way too cutesy, the animation sub par and it was made in 2000 people!
