  "The Lorax", colorfully animated and wonderfully exuberant, does a great job conveying a Dr. Seuss-esque world, but like always, Hollywood always needs to dumb down the main core of what made the source material such a classic: the message. Instead, Hollywood has managed to fluff the presentation and everything about its style to, altogether, cater to "children's needs". The book, undoubtedly, does a better job, but nevertheless, this film isn't too bad. It's a good time, but I recommend reading the book to your children first before watching an above-average Dr. Seuss adaptation.

  Talk about bad storytelling, the plot was split down the middle with little to no encompassing relationships. The Lorax played little to no role, the protagonist and his quest for "love" is about as real as the trees littered in the city of whateverthefuck. The theme is delivered with such... heavy handed simplicity you can't help but feel like patronized. (especially after seeing it done so well with Wall-e) The music? Forgettable. I'm also embarrassed for the attempted "awe" factor with all the annoyingly voiced forest animals. All in all I feel sorry for the talented animation/art team that had to work on this piece of crap.

  "Meh. That was my first thoughts as the ending credits started rolling. I was under the assumption it was going to be much funnier than it was. I guess that's what happens when they put all the funny moments in the trailers. Oh well. I did think it was cute though. I think Taylor and Zac did a good job. I won't lie, I fell asleep more than once. So perhaps I am not someone who can fairly judge the film on it's entirety. But I got most of it. So take away what you will from these thoughts of mine. It could have been better and I could have tried harder to stay awake. But neither happened. So that's all."

  Dr. Seuss movies don't really translate to movies as well as they probably could. "Grinch" was ok, and "Cat in the Hat" was down right terrible. Here the "Lorax" is in the middle. The animation is fantastic, and the characters voices are done good. But the story is a bit muddled with kind of an abrupt ending. Actually this could have been called something like "Saving the Trees", because the Lorax is more of a background character. Movie is about a city where all the trees are fake. A girl asks a boy to get her a real tree, and he sets out to find one. On his journey he comes across the Once-Ler who tells him the story of the Lorax, and things go from there. Kids will probably love this, and may even want to plant a tree. But adults will do a lot of eye rolling, and looking at their watches. I've seen much, much worse. But, if you want to enjoy an animated movie with your children, then you can do better. Still worth a watch, and maybe over time it could grow on me. But for now, it just didn't work for me.

  Dear God this was yet another appalling kids film that talks down to "our future". This is such a huge pile of disgusting drivel I don't even know where to begin. The Lorax sees a town that lives in a huge bubble where everything is made of plastic. One boy goes out to find a real tree so he can bang some chick. He comes across The Once-Ler, theman responsible for the lack of trees who proceeds to tell him the tale of where they all went. The animation is colourful but surprisingly dull. All the characters look so tacky and cheap. I couldn't be absorbed at all. The film treats children like idiots, with obnoxious Alvin and the Chipmunk sound-alike fish and entire scenes with no purpose but to make the kids go "OOOOOH" at the 3D. This wouldn't be all that bad (well it would), but the film also has a serious message that it wants you to consider. Can you have it both ways? The original TV short and the book are charming which helps with the heavy handed message. The film also makes a huge mistake in introducing a ridiculous comedic antagonist. The film doesn't need one. WE should be the antagonists and forced to face the state of the world. By making some guy control the air itlets us completely off the hook. We also have characters such as the 'cool' granny to just make sure any attempts at comedy die where they stand. The songs are some of the most dreadful, both lyrically and musically that I've ever heard. You wouldn't believe some of the things they try and get away with. Finally, the narrative structure is a mess. Not surprising based on the length of the book. The original story was told to us, by giving this role to an actual character (who is only doing it for a girl) it once again undermines the story, as does the happy ending. I don't have to do anything now as the story was resolved. It's painful to see things like this happen to great stories. Watch a beautiful animation with a message in Wall-E.

  Much, much better then I was expecting. Great for kids, fun for adults. Fun for all ages. A must see family movie. Making a movie for this short story was definitely a major risk-taker, but the producers, in my mind, achieved every aspect of the story we grew know and love. The animation was spot on, both realistic and playful. Designs was everything Dr. Seuss, from the strange shaped buildings to harmonizing goldfish. The characters were wonderful, Zac Efron and Taylor Swift delivering very believable scenes, despite the odd pairing. I've seen many negative reviews for this movie, but keep in mind that this film was aiming at a younger audience, but it is still excellent for the older crowd. It is a major environmental film that proves the harsh reality of human brutality, a very controversial topic even today. Also, movies like these are usually taken differently by various viewers, but as long as you don't compare the movie to the original story of The Lorax, this new adaption is actually very good. It has its moments of humor, romance, music, suspense, and morality, and is a definite crowd pleaser. Go see it, I recommended it. In the town of Thneedville, a walled city, everything is artificial even the trees. And the air is provided by the O'Hare Corporation for a price. Ted, a young man who likes a girl named Audrey who wants to see a real tree. And thinking that if he can find it will win her affections. So he talks to his mother and grand mother about it and his grandmother tells him to seek out someone called The Once-ler, which he does. He asks The Once-ler what happened to the trees, he tells Ted that it began when he wanted to create something he called Thneed. So he set out to find the material he needs to make it. And when he comes across a forest with trees with the most beautiful leaves, he thinks this is it. So he chops a tree down but then a creature who calls himself The Lorax who says he speaks for the trees and all the creature s in the forest, and he says that what he is doing--chopping down a tree is wrong. But he ignores him. He then stops talking and tells Ted to come back tomorrow. But when Ted tries to go out, O'Hare who knows what Ted is doing--trying to find a tree, tells him to stop it cause it could ruin O'Hare's business. So he makes sure Ted can go out. So Ted tries to find another way.

  A cute and enjoyable animation that stays true to the ecological message of Dr. Seuss's book. With an optimistic and hopeful story that speaks to all children, it proves to be much more efficient (and funnier) than the likes of Ice Age 4 and Madagascar 3, also released this year.

  Based extremely loosely on the Dr Seuss story of the same name and as usual with Hollywood they have fudged it all up. The story is an environmental one, an eco plot if you will about the effects of cutting down trees. Put simply (just like the original book did) there is a small town which is gloomy and polluted. The reason for this is because all the trees were chopped down to mass market 'thneeds' by the one they call 'Once-ler'. 'Once-ler' tells a young boy the whole story of how he destroyed all the trees to create his 'thneeds' and ignored the advice and warnings of the 'Lorax', guardian of the trees. 'Once-ler' regrets his actions and gives the young boy a tree seed to plant so that trees may return as well as the 'Lorax'. There is a bit more to it but that is the basic premise. So what does Hollywood do you ask? well do you really need to ask? I'm sure you can all guess but I'll tell you anyway. Hollywood strips the story down and refits it with tripe filler and made up characters to fill out a decent length run time. Throw in some ridiculous vehicle chase sequences, cliched slapstick and jokes and some hideous musical numbers and there you have it, typical Hollywood trash. Now I will admit the film looks lovely, full of bright bold colours, its cheerful, light hearted and with some nice CGI animation. BUT the lesson has been diluted and cluttered by fancy ass visuals and 'action' sequences. Yes there is still a nice message within the film, the finale shows what can be done if they jettison the crapola but that's only about a 3min sequence out of an entire film!. I simply cannot understand why they thought to create new characters!. The new character 'Aloysius O'Hare' is REALLY annoying too, he just looks annoying, making him short...yeah that's not funny. I realise they needed to fill the story to reach a reasonable film run time but if that can't be done then don't do it. Maybe try another route, don't just make a whole load of stuff up!. 'Once-ler' was suppose to be faceless, a boogieman like equivalent of modern faceless companies/corporations that destroy nature for their gain. You can't uproot that, that's the whole point!. The world where this takes place isn't named, plus it isn't some bright, colourful, 'Willy Wonka' type place with fancy technology!!. I see what they did with that sure but why?? stop changing the whole premise!!, it all looks like something outta 'Despicable Me'. Of course we don't know how Seuss would take to it but I'm pretty sure the original fable wasn't meant to include futuristic vehicles, buildings, 'Once-ler' playing guitar, airship things and some god awful songs including the now obligatory hip hop pop song for the final credits which happens for almost all kids films now (more manufactured faceless nobodies singing forgettable songs that will fade into obscurity as quickly as they appeared). I like the fact that Hollywood has tried to put across a good message...of sorts. I'm sure they are more concerned about another franchise to milk that will rake in the moolah but the initial positive effort is there. If only this could of been done more down to earth, with a little more sense towards the source material and maybe in a different media (stop motion would have been nice, Selick directing perhaps?). At the end of the day its merely been mutated into another flashy, churned out, in your face CGI flick (in 3D -_-). How ironic, a polluted vision of Dr Seuss' simple little tale, such a shame. Ignore this, stick to the original book or 1972 TV special, don't deny your children these.

  Vibrant and colorful, but oh-so-unfunny! I can't honestly recall a single moment where <i>The Lorax</i> made me laugh. Not even a hearty chuckle or a related thought of amusement. And clearly I'm not alone in being underwhelmed by this film. I've never read any of the children's books by the beloved Dr. Seuss, but I can scarcely imagine this doing any kind of justice to the original story. It means well I'm sure, but the eco-friendly message at its core holds no subtlety whatsoever, while simulatenously struggling to be hip, in an obvious attempt to keep the tweens from reaching for their cell phones. They overdo it bit also with the inherent bubbliness; sharing similarities with what often feels like a random episode of <i>The Teletubbies</i>. Not much positive can be said about the voice cast either. Danny De Vito, whom I will forever remember for his fantastic performance as Philoctetes in Disney's <i>Hercules</i>, is squandered here among his lesser talented co-stars. Corporate greed, pollution, our nature dying - all essential issues in their own right, but clumsily executed in this second-rate animation flick. It desperately wants to achieve what <i>Wall-E</i> did way better, years before it. Passable entertainment-wise and worth a look, but I can now clearly establish that <i>The Lorax</i> doesn't spring from the flamboyant streets of Thneed-ville; it comes from a little place called "Tries-too-hard".

  I much preferred the recent Horton Hears a Who! but it's still a million times better than Jim Carrey's How the Grinch Stole Christmas and the God awful Mike Myers The Cat in the Hat. It's perhaps a little over-complicated and not as pure and simple as the original story, the message is still there but as much as I loved the Bears and the Fish etc, they really should come second to the classic story but they don't, they are the best bits.

  For the most part, it's hard to go wrong with animated feature films. Even the lesser offerings can generate enough entertainment value to make the movie passable. Then there's "The Lorax", which represents a rare, but resounding whiff for the genre. The animation is probably the film's only strength. The story is an adaptation of a Dr. Seuss tale, but everything is so uninspired and phoned in, that it quickly becomes apparent that Univeral was just cashing in on the source material. The characters are bland and forgettable, while the musical numbers regress from annoying to down right embarrassing. The part of "The Lorax" that I probably resent the most, is the environmental agenda that's forced down the viewer's throat throughout the whole mess. I guess the same message is evident in the Dr. Seuss story, so I should have known better. The true gauge for how good these movies are is the reaction of the little people, and all of kids in attendance, seemed as unamused as I was. So there you have it. Unless you're a hippie, you might want to avoid "The Lorax". Go chop down a tree instead.

  The Lorax is a mixed bag. There are some bright spots. The animation is vivid and there are a trio of fish that sing in unison with amusing high pitched vocals. They are memorable. They're reminiscent of character types in early Max Fleischer shorts. But the Lorax himself, which should have been a tragic figure, is an annoying pain every time he shows up here with a lecture. The movie is a product of our modern age. I'll admit I was amused by the irony of a film warning against the dangers of consumerism in a movie that totally represents that mentality. The 3D computer graphics are oddly inappropriate for a story about going back to basics. The script is like a result of some focus group trying hard to be hip. Phrases like "You rule Grandma!" or "I know, right?!" are so distinctly 2012 that they betray the timeless quality of the original message. Dr. Seuss adaptations have been historically difficult. The Cat in the Hat remains one of the worst aberrations of the source material ever made. Yet these are the same scribes that adapted Horton Hears a Who! and that was rather charming. The Lorax isn't a horrible picture. It's a vibrant, colorful spectacle that is pleasant enough. The pro-environment moral is well intentioned. But the simplicity of the book is missing. In its place is a heavy handed tale of corporate greed that feels labored and somewhat joyless.

It's never annoying, never too boring, and never disinteresting, but its not unique or fresh enough to earn any major praise.

  The makers of The Lorax must've thought they had a no-brainer on their hands. Dr. Seuss has an already established fanbase, both adults and children love his stories, and previous film adaptations of his books have done extraordinarily well at the box office. So maybe they skipped some of the writers staff meetings, or maybe they let the animators throw in some of their own comedy ideas, or maybe they didn't think about the actual movie they had to create. Whatever the case, The Lorax lacks. In a society made entirely of plastic, a boy (Zac Efron) has a crush on a hippy girl (Taylor Swift, who's actually pretty bad here) who loves trees. The boy wants to impress her, so he goes off on a search for the very last tree. In the wasteland of the outside world, he finds the home of the Once-ler (Ed Helms), who tells him the tale of the trees and their guardian, the Lorax. Of course the evil, greedy, stereotypical, corporate businessman (Rob Riggle) is going to do everything in his power to hold his monopoly on air, so he tries to thwart the kid and his girlfriend. The Lorax comes off as a pastiche of other environmentally conscious cartoons, from Wall-E to even Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs. Even the animation is pretty generic looking. It feels like they're not even trying. And in the world of children's entertainment, there are few crimes worse than sullying the good name of Dr. Seuss. This may have been one of the few rare instances where my one year-old daughter (fascinated by all the flash and pretty colors up on the screen) wanted to watch a movie and daddy wanted to leave. But as a parent, I know there are better cartoons for my child than this crummy, souless movie.

  This movie really resonates. It's a really simple parable about how fragile and valuable the natural world is, and how easy it is to do the wrong thing. There is one song sequence in particular that drives the point home, that's insidiously catchy and elegantly ingenious is the subtle ways it goes from being playful to being menacing. "How Bad Can I Be?" the Once-ler sings as he happily disregards the warnings of the Lorax and harvests every single tree to make himself rich. I love the way it gets harder and harder to sing along with him as the situation gets worse and the Once-ler gets sucked into the finite cycle of greed. The story and themes aside, this movie is beautiful. The character and set designs are delightful and Thneedville doesn't have a single straight line as far as the eye can see. Visually stunning and cinetamtically very impressive, I thoroughly enjoyed this, and I'm not even its target audience. This one's a gem.
