There are moments when you laugh at the antics of Johnnie who is so free from normal propriety standards. There are moments when it is heartbreaking to watch how everybody, in particular his own parents, go to great lengths to ensure that he is isolated far away from them. Interc...( read more)ut with his story is the tensed climate of WWI. Johnnie and Lalla, living in seclusion and utterly devoted to each other, make for a contrast to the gloom and tragedy that is taking place all over Europe at the time. The climax where Johnnie gives his recital was a brilliant effort of triumph for everyone -- the actors for their performance, the director for executing the scene, the writers for bringing all the plots to culminate to this point, and for the composer for creating that amazing score.
Tom Hollander is absolutely unrecognizable in his role of the grumpy King George V. Miranda Richardson is simply a class apart. I was actually quite surprised by Gina McKee (of whom I didn't get a very good impression after watching "The Forsyte Saga"). The two kids were very well played. The actress, Fritha Goodey, playing the "mysterious beautiful woman" was stunning and suited for her part.
While I liked the political parts, the grand parties, etc., I found them quite confusing at times. The filmmakers seem to have assumed that the audience would know everything about the WWI, which I didn't. I didn't quite understand, from the movie, why the assassination of the archduke would lead to a war with Germany.

I'm surprised they've got this movie in here, but not at all upset about it. I saw this very late one night when I couldn't sleep and was touched. Such a beautiful but tragic story.
