The Lost World - Jurassic Park

Jeff Goldblum, Julianne Moore, Pete Postlethwaite, Richard Attenborough, Vince Vaughn

A few years back, venture capitalist John Hammond figured out how to recreate dinosaurs from DNA fragments encased in ember. He started a company called InGen, which placed the genetically engineered ...( read more  read more... )dinosaurs in a theme park on an island in Costa Rica. But the Jurassic Park systems broke down shortly before it could open, the dinosaurs got free and had to be destroyed, and the island was closed to the public. In the aftermath, everyone involved moved quickly to quash the story. InGen wanted to limit its liability. The Costa Rican government wanted to preserve its reputation as a tourist paradise. And the individual scientists who had been hired as consultants on the project were bound by the nondisclosure agreement to remain silent. But as Dr. Ian Malcolm is about to find out... something has survived. Based on Michael Crichton's sequel novel.

One of the biggest disappointments ever! Spielberg really misses the mark with this one, not even a great cast can save it. it's not even close to being a guilty pleasure. Oh well.

    "Something has survived"

A research team is sent to the Jurassic Park Site B island to study the dinosaurs there while another team approaches with another agenda.

    REVIEW

Although "The Los...( read more)t World: Jurassic Park" was tedious with pointless, countless chase scenes, the film still managed to surprise me. The dinos, as in the first film to an extent, seemed more like plot devices, but they seem more animal-like in this film. I just wish the movie was more like the novel, in which case, it's nothing like the book at all. It starts off with plot, then abandons it. Half-way through the movie, it seemed like Spielberg got bored with the material and it shows. But despite its faults, it still remained very enjoyable and doesn't seem to copy its predecessor.

Alright, but too dark for my taste. And the Asian tourists being chased by the T-Rex did not exclaim "Godzilla!"

A decent performance by Julianne Moore and a rather good one by Jeff Goldblum are equally wasted in this one, which is quite possibly one of the worst sequels ever made.

The first 45 minutes or more of the movie are spent grasping at straws in an effort to establish continuity...( read more) between the two films, and instead of a suspense building exposition of several plotlines, we have a narrative that really goes nowhere important. Say it simply: there was a B-site, now we go to the B-site, where there are dinosaurs.

Trying to capitalize on the success of the child characters in the first one, Spielberg included Ian Malcolm's (Jeff Goldblum's) daughter with disastrous results. Memo to Spielberg: it's about dinosaurs - not about absentee father figures!

The second half of the film is all action, but the first half built up such minimal anticipation that there was really nothing to watch it for by that point save for Vince Vaughn, who played a supporting character quite well in one of his biggest early roles. But when you're watching an actor for the "what he was like before he was really famous" factor, it becomes pretty obvious: you're watching a pretty bad movie.

Spielberg's sequel to his smash hit Jurassic Park is quite a different movie than the first one. There are more dinosaurs right from the start, the whole feeling is less warm and sunny, unlike in the first movie where the prehistoric animals are also hailed as beauties and worth ...( read more)saving, the whole mood is grittier and darker. That impression is also reflected in the decaying set design that is under constant rain. Of course Goldblum and Vaughn make sure there are still plenty of laughs anyway and Postlethwaite is a convincing hunter. The movie isn't always entirely logic or convincing, but Spielberg makes sure to place his action sequences at the right points. The sequence of the trailers sliding over the cliff alone is worth biting ten fingernails off. Not without weaknesses but still great popcorn entertainment.

Good. But not at the level of the original. That's usually the case though for me.
