More serious role for Jim Carrey. He is a Hollywood scriptwriter who is involved in a car accident where he loses his memory. He is marooned in a small town where he is mistaken for a long lost war hero. Interesting plot.

It was that memorable, but it was alright.

Carrey proves he can do a lot more than the funny, light roles he's usually being given.

The problem with modern tributes to classic Hollywood is that the gee-whiz attitude and clean sentimentality must inevitably be forced where it used to be natural, invented where it used to exist. That innocent G-ratedness, a la Pleasantville, is a thing of the past, so movies li...( read more)ke this always seem wanting.

"That's the real world. I want my goddamn life back, Adele. Is that so hard to understand?"

I was quite disappointed with this film because I loved Frank Darabont's other masterpieces, and this falls short of both. The story of a man who loses his memory, and then gets it...( read more) back halfway through is quite predictable and long-winded. The film goes on for far too long, and for me it did feel like it dragged.

Saying that, I did enjoy the way the film was shot in terms of cinematography, which was often very beautiful - and Jim Carrey gives an absolutely spectacular performance here. We've seen him in several serious roles, such as in 'The Truman Show' or 'Eternal Sunshine', and despite not enjoying the film, I do think this is his best serious character portrayal to date. He completely immersed himself in the role, and he is just touching. I also loved Martin Landau, and so perhaps the film is worth viewing just for their performances. But overall, quite weak and I'm sorry to say I wouldn't watch it again.

This is a sweet, patriotic, romantic fable in which a blacklisted screenwriter named Peter Appleton suffers from amnesia after an accident, and is mistaken for and embraced as the local hero who was missing in action from the war. He suddenly has a whole town who loves him, a fat...( read more)her, and a fiancée. The small town is the perfect little utopia of people who care and look out for each other. Peter (confused as Luke) spends his days watching sunsets from lighthouses, dancing under the stars, strolling down leafy lanes, fixing up his "father's" old movie theatre, and trying to piece his memory back together. Shortly after he starts to remember and regains his identity, he is taken to court for being a communist, which he isn't. The rest of the movie swells in my heart a huge pride in being American. (Well, the kind of America that our forefathers began, the one that lived by the Constitution of the United States.) Peter is inspired by Luke's fiancée and is given new purpose to do what is right. This film pays homage to old-fashioned values. What a treat! I thought I could predict the ending, but it was clever and unexpected.
