The Manchurian Candidate Reviews and Ratings

The perfect movie. Cast, story, atmosphere. I'm amazed Hitchcock didn't have his hand in this one.

I hear that this is the one to watch

I'm a bit ashamed to say that I saw the remake before seeing the original version. But considering I was only born in the late 80s, it may also be a normal thing. Anyway, I must admit I loved it. The script is excellent and the cast is all amazing.

    Brilliant. Well played all around.

i have the denzel version of this film

September 2009 - A very interesting psychological thriller. The story is a bit lousy but to me is a good example of when the surrealist features of a movie make it stand out more significantly than the realistic parts. The dream is fantastic and unconventional for such thrillers.

Brilliant yet intense Cold War thriller.
  • August 17, 2009
I was completely taken aback by how well made and relevant this movie was. A pretty good thriller.
  • August 14, 2009
it was so annoying because i was amped to watch this as everyone was saying it was a classic and it was coming up on television but it turned out to be the remake...
  • June 27, 2009
it was okay, I am sure it made a better novel than a film
  • June 6, 2009
both this & the remake are excellent movies
  • May 30, 2009
I've always found this hysterical, off-kilter thriller to be too artificial.
  • May 30, 2009
wow!! it's a great film... nice ending... classic!
  • May 18, 2009
    classic! lansbury was awesome
  • April 21, 2009
A very entertaining political drama, Laurence Harvey gives a stunning performance and Sinatras was not that bad either.
  • April 14, 2009
very twisted but allways interesting. fairly slow paced though.
  • April 3, 2009
Better than the remake. Maybe watching the Denzel Washington version first, ruined the chance of being surprised by the original film, but nonetheless, it's a good film.
  • March 27, 2009
Angela Lansbury and Frank Sinatra are quite the disfunctional mother and son but it's good.
  • March 19, 2009
Didn't know there was an original.

Awesome cold war/communist paranoia film. Everyone gives great performances and this has some great character subtext (surprisiingly mature) and violence (surprisingly graphic) that bellies its time period. Once thought of as a lost treasure after the film disappeared for a time ...( read more)post Kennedy assassination; it's well worth looking up and soaking in the directorial techniques, the crisp script and the fine characterizations. You might want to try to bring some of that back. You won't find it in the remake (felt a bit neutured) and you certainly won't find it in Frankenheimer's kid's (Michael Bay) films.

Reminded me of Zoolander, but with Angela Petreli from Heroes. Brainwashed assassins. Political domineering mother. Nothing I'm going to remember tomorrow.
  • December 29, 2008
one of the finest political thrillers to come out of hollywood. a fantastic "concept movie"
  • December 19, 2008
Although Denzel Washington starred in a decent remake of this film, I prefer the way the original was shot. Quite a visual trip, with a intense twisted storyline, I love this film.
  • December 12, 2008
    still the best version
  • November 24, 2008
Absolutely top draw, this movie, a gem of a plot based on a novel of the same name and with memorable performances specially from Angela Lansbury. Probably the best political thriller of all time.
  • November 23, 2008
    One of my favorites.
  • November 20, 2008
I saw the remake and it was pretty good. So now I wanted to see the original.
  • October 13, 2008
This move was really a heavy hitter.

Without a doubt one of the best drama/spy conspiracy theory type movie I have ever seen. The performance of everyone involved was simply outstanding and some parts very haunting.

The fact that the movie came out in 1962 is also one big irony. A decade where many assassinated ind...( read more)ividuals were and still are treated as a conspiracy. Especially the RFK assassination where some people believe that Sirhan was a Manchurian Candidate victim that simply followed order than forgot what he had done. This movie is way ahead of its time and although it's not perfect it still stands out and will hit you hard.

The ending kept me on the edge of my seat and the build up is fantastic. The score is also perfect and so was the directing of the movie.

Extra credit to the brilliant performance of Angela Lansbury, one of the most haunting and psychological villains I have seen on the screen. Makes you want to keep a close eye on every first lady or, second lady? That is about to enter the white house.

  • August 25, 2008
Well, this movie is considered a classic and rightfully so. Everybody does a terrific job and as the movie moves along it only gets better and better.
Oh, and Angela Lansbury is fantastic in this. It's a first class thriller.

One of those suspense films where each scene is superior to the one preceding it. That Sinatra sure is a fuck up, though. "Well, I could take him in and deprogram him... but surely LOVE will prevail." You idiot.

Upon the second watching, I was feeling that I had overrated thi...( read more)s film throughout the first 80 or so minutes when the film is somewhat slow. But when the plot in this one comes together, then I realized that this wasn't simply a good film, but legitimately a great one. And Angela Lansbury (who I'm sure must have looked 60 years old when she was a teenager) gives one of "those" performances. You've seen them, and you know what I'm talking about. She gives one of the most powerful performances I've ever seen, playing one of the best antagonists I've ever seen, exuding screen presence like nobody's business. It was simply an acting clinic, and one of the all-time great performances I have ever witnessed. So at the 80 minute mark, I was thinking that maybe this wasn't a 5-star movie. At the 2 hour mark, I realized how very wrong I was. This is one of the best suspense movies ever made.

As highly regarded as this film is, I gotta say, it's pretty overrated. Either that, or I just don't know what I'm talking about. I wanted to really like this more than I did. It's a tad overlong, unevenly paced, and a bit boring at times (poor execution here and there). Maybe I'...( read more)m nitpicking, maybe I'm not, but I really had a hard time getting into this. The performances are really good though (but I think Janet's Leigh's role was pointless). I really liked the concept and story, but as I said, it was hard for me to find really engaging. I will say this though, Angela Lansbury was a real surprise. She's a great villain, and the incest angle adds some real balls.

Some people say Sirhan Sirhan was a Manchurian Candidate, I believe them.

Topical in today's age. I just can't help but wonder.
  • July 7, 2008
Wow...this was such a cool movie.
  • June 18, 2008
Way better than the remake. Watch this one, not the other one!
  • June 6, 2008
Important to cinema for several reasons. A must see.
  • June 1, 2008
What a great thriller! The Manchurian Candidate does not disappoint. The cast is marvelous, the plot is great, and so is the suspense. There really isn't much else to say except it's a great film.
  • May 16, 2008
One of the best paranoia thrillers of all time.
