Plot:
This is a Modern Classic, one of the very best films to come out of the 1970s/80s German Cinema. No sugar coating, just pure, unadulterated truth as seen through the rear-view mirror of people who have lived the horrors and survived into new tomorrows. A true gem of a film.
The Marriage of Maria Braun is a deeply affecting, poised drama set in Germany during WWII, and its aftermath. The first 40 minutes or so moved uncharacteristically fast for a Fassbinder film. Once he stopped focusing on Maria Braun's surroundings, and more on her actual character, this film was finally able to capture my undivided attention, and became truly hypnotic, like only a Fassbinder film can. There was no need for extensive, drawn-out combat sequences in order to achieve the film's significance. Through Maria Braun and her relationships, you gain a strong insight into what life was like back in post WWII Germany.
I've heard some critics refer to his films as "cold" and "emotionless". Rainer Werner Fassbinder has the remarkable ability to allow the audience to feel exceptionally close to his characters, whilst also keeping us at a safe distance. I suppose I can see how this aspect of his filmmaking style could be misinterpreted as "cold" or "emotionless", but just because the characters are not continuously gushing with "emotion" in every single frame, doesn't mean it's not possible for you to feel anything from them.
Though I did love The Marriage of Maria Braun, I don't think I can say it is Fassbinder's "masterpiece", as I've heard so many others refer to it. Nevertheless, the story is truly bold and the film itself is definitely stunning! In addition to its greatness, Hanna Schygulla's flawless performance as Maria Braun is quite possibly the finest of her career!
This movie reminded me of Red-Headed Woman (Check it out on TCM's Forbidden Hollywood Collection vol. 1). Except for the fact that it was a drama. And there were a bunch of former Nazis. And it was far more R-Rated. And she was blonde.
The blonde thing may have put the distinctions over-the-top.
This is one of those Criterions that I decided to read about before watching it. Apparently, Rainer Werner Fassbinder ushered in the New German Cinema and after watching The Marriage of Maria Braun, I have to concur. This feels like a contemporary movie where we follow a strong, but confused Maria Braun through the decade (approx.) following World War II. What's interesting is that while the other partner in her marriage, her husband Hermann, is the driving objective for the entire movie, the man has very little screentime. Either way, his portrayal of the leashed male roped into Maria's plan is striking. Overall, the performances were stellar and even when characters make seemingly odd choices, the tone of the movie really holds the viewer captive and suspends disbelief admirably.
Watch out for the casting of Willy. Do you recognize him? He was only one of the baddies in Brosnan's first Bond adventure, Goldeneye. I always assumed he was Russian because he played a Russian. Not so, because his German apparently is top-notch! I mean, I could IMDB him, but I think I've already given enough attention to this review.
herr fassbinder did a lot in 32 years. this is his best out of those i have seen. it's post-war german history in a beautiful, difficult and unflinching nutshell
Stand by your man through thick and thin. The trials and tribulations of a soldier's wife from the POV of WWII losers.
