A laudible adaptation of the novel by Thomas Hardy.

A good cast, though many are little known. Though long, the story doesn't seem to be over - extended and, though dramatic, none of the cast overacts.

Ciaran Hinds does a moving portrayal of Henchard as he turns back to alcohol, sinks back into depression and eventually loses what he sought to put behind him. Severely underrated.

What a depressing story of a life filled with bad choices! Seriously bad choices and bad timing. Yet you still felt as though he would have liked to redeem himself but just never could and didn't when he had the chance. All a credit to Mr. Hinds' fine acting. Cannot believe M...( read more)r. Farfrae "fell in love" with Lucetta who was a little too calculating and a little too old for him. Glad to see he ended up with Elizabeth. James Purefoy was nice to watch and Jodhi May did a good job as well. Still, what a depressing story.

A long cautionary tale, or Edwardian soap opera! Love Ciaran Hinds though.

The movie makes you realize the large impact of your small choices. It also shows how the world would be a better place if people were less jealous, more forgiving, less critical, more accepting, less dogmatic, more kind, etc.

Don't remember much of it, besides the fact that I've seen it.

So, what was the significance of the black bird gift near the end? Was this a well known symbol at the time?
