While boasting an atmospheric homage to horror films of the late 60's and early to mid 70's The Messengers has all the making of a great horror film but it lacks the soul, the acting and the true terror to really have the title of a horror/mystery thriller. But what it does...( read more) do is give you a good run for your money, even though in some places it is a little cornball and preposterous.

The Messengers is an American horror film with an Asian horror style brought by the Pang brothers(Director's of the original "The EYE" and both Bangkok Dangerous.) Have the right idea and the talent to director horror but don't have the true knowledge and understanding to execute a story of this caliber. They rely to much on visual tricks and eerie music than what is actually important in horror: Good acting which can support the eerie story and plot, an actually good plot and story that has original qualities and chills. But while" The Messengers" has some of these things it still falls flat under a mediocre script and average acting form the supporting cast, while the lead Kristen Stewart holds up well under the pressure of bad direction and a poor script and comes out as a class act in this. But all in al This an average horror film, with a used premise.

Kristen Stewart does good here and gives her all but can't elevate the standard material, her performance is crucial to the film seeing as she, besides the little boy, are the only ones that have full roles in the film. Everyone else is support, but she holds this film together really nicely and is a good reason to see this. But all in all the cast doesn't do bad here it's just some of them don't try hard enough to make this a viable and truly suspenseful horror film.

The Messengers is clique at best and a major rip off of countless other great horror films but it has one saving factor, it is entertaining and the Hong Kong horror style may please fan of foreign films of that genre. But it won't do much else for you but bore you in some places and shock you in others, but it's light on the terror and that is the downfall , it doesn't deliver on the premise and falls flat when it needs to be horrifying. All in all a mildly entertaining, mediocre horror film with a good idea but nothing else. None the less "The Messengers" is passing entertainment.

3 of 5 stars for the suspense movie The Messengers. A family moves from civilization to the middle-of-no-where into an obviously haunted house about two steps better than the Addams Family house. We have an unbalanced daughter and a baby brother who "sees things". The house is pa...( read more)rt of a Sunflower farm. We hire a farm hand to help our family. Strange things start to happen specially with the local crow population. I won't spoil the suspense elements of the movie. Of course, had it been me, I'd never have moved into the house in the first place. This is a well made suspense movie with really odd things happening. Good suspense music. Good plot and well acted. I do recommend this movie.

Although I rather enjoyed the majority of the ghost effects and the spooky goings on, I was disappointed by the ending. The plot wasn't really much different from the average ghost story, except for the ending.

Overall I'd say it was worth watching once, but I wouldn't go to ...( read more)any spectacular effort to watch it again - and if I did see it again I'd probably shut it off before the end.

Predictable, but not devoid of entertainment. Good cast, haunting setting, but basically like watching "The Others" with some highly stylized special effects (of which I am quickly getting tired - they all seem the same and are just creepy and distracting sometimes). It's not too...( read more) gory, though. Wish there was a little more suspense, as it seemed more focused on plot than gore, but it was kind of obvious what was going on. No big surprises for me!

I love this movie. None of my friends will watch it, but they all say it sounds good.
  • October 14, 2009
Not a bad thriller except for the fact there were some really awkward pauses during the movie... Like why doesn't she just turn around?
  • October 8, 2009
Actually one of the better horror films to come out for a while in my opinion. After the first 30 minutes it did hand out a plenty of suspenseful moments and genuine jumps and scares, then didn't stop all the way through.
Occasionally the odd cliche involving the background mus...( read more)ic giving out large bangs to help with the story, which is mildly irritating and generic, but other than not a problem.
The idea that the ghosts are stalking the 2 children of the house make the story all the more frightnening and genuinely spooky. The young boy is a terrific character and played excellently well.
The Messengers does have it's similarities to Silent Hill, like the ghost crawling along the ceiling whilst the little boy follows it is a great touch.

Not at all what I was expecting. Film had an interesting twist at the end and creepy vibe through out the movie. This movie doesn't deliver for me. I give 2 1/2 because it was entertaining enough to watch.

I don't care what other people say, but I really liked The Mesengers. the movie was really interesting and had a few jumpy parts! This is a mood movie. And this is the problem with a lot of modern "horror" movies and the recent spate of horror from Asia, let alone the middling US dare like this. However, this is a US one made by an SE Asia team. So this movie is all doom and gloom and situations that you ca...( read more)n see coming, if not feel it through the whole movie. It is very much your standard kid-sees-dead-people movie except the ghosts appear vicious in the hands grabbing you out of nowhere sense, but there is, of course, more to the story.

But I will contrast this with something of a "horror" movie that is also a mood movie with an overall impending doom aura, the French film Martyrs. Martyrs is a movie where you know at all times that something bad is going to happen, and does often. Yet there are situations in the movie where even though something bad is going to happen, the mood seems to lighten enough for you to genuinely connect emotionally with the character. That makes the next horrible thing that happens all that much more impactful (plus it is just a better movie than this). I take the Japan and US versions of The Ring. It took a long while before I related to Naomi Watts, probably because the movie takes a very detached and depressing view of everything right from the beginning. The Japanese version gives a more engaging view of the family and you even connect with Hiroyuki Sanada, unlike his counterpart in the US version. There is an intimacy there.

The Messengers never lets us relate to anyone who is tormented here. The phony new girl meeting geek scenario is very forced and with no real tonal shift ? though this may be the only part of the movie that doesn't have that doom and gloom. Since you don't care what happens to anyone, even the mute boy since he doesn't do anything endearing except stand around and sleep in a crib well past he probably should be. And the end is supposed to be surprising, but really isn't when you think about the character play.

Bad plot. Cheap scare! Quite a disappointment i expected it to be gd!
  • August 27, 2009
I watched this movie for the second time and I like the story. You expect it to be a haunted house where the ghosts are trying to kill you, but you never expect who the real killer was/is. That's what I liked most!
  • August 21, 2009
A good haunting thriller with a interesting twist.

One good scary movie lots of suspense and Kristen that plays in Twilight is a wonderful actress. Kept me on the edge of my chair and I did not want to leave the room. So many things happen when the family moves into an old farm house. It is haunted by the last family who used to ...( read more)live there but were murdered. The previous owner had also raised a crop of sunflower seeds in the field. But the bank want to take the land away from them. When the stranger comes by. When I first saw The Messengers I find it scary yet watchable, and part of the reason I only watched this is because of a great performance of Kristen Stewart in her first horror movie (no really, she's hot!) and claiming to have seen poltergeists in a creepy-looking farm. Yeah, even with those sunflowers behind them, the farm is so creepy looking that it carried the darkest secrets and even good horror moments like the birds. I didn't even get scared or bored during 90 minutes of this, so even though it was sometimes slow, the film wasn't so bad. All I wanted to see was a good view of deathlike horror with the weirdest things happening in a farm.
