The Missing

Tommy Lee Jones, Cate Blanchett, Evan Rachel Wood, Jenna Boyd, Aaron Eckhart

Cate Blanchett blazes through The Missing, a new Western directed by Ron Howard (A Beautiful Mind, Apollo 13). The camera truly loves the planes of her face; even dusty and bedraggled, she radiates st...( read more  read more... )ar power--which is good, because The Missing needs it. When her daughter is kidnapped by renegade Indians, Maggie Gilkeson (Blanchett) is forced to turn to her estranged father (Tommy Lee Jones, Men in Black, The Fugitive), a man who abandoned her as a child to join an Indian tribe. Together, they pursue a malignant brujo (or witch), who sells young girls in Mexico. The Missing features solid supporting performances from Evan Rachel Wood, Eric Schweig, Aaron Eckhart, Val Kilmer, and feisty young Jenna Boyd as Maggie's youngest daughter Dot, who refuses to be left behind. Despite the cast and some gorgeous cinematography, though, The Missing never finds its stride. --Bret Fetzer

Great performances by all! Some of the Native American characters are not shown in a good light. A bunch of Indians who were working as scouts for the US army have gone rouge and under the leadership of an evil witch-doctor are kidnapping young women to sell across the Mexico b...( read more)order. Blanchett still has here youngest daughter with her but has lost her older daughter. She can't rely on any official law enforcement to track down the criminals and retrieve her daughter. Her father, played by Tommy Lee Jones, has recently wondered back into her life and he is probably the only one who can help her. Her father abandoned the family when she was young and he has tried to live life as an Indian since. He has a wild spirit. There are lots of great father/daughter and mother/daughter dynamics. It is a violent, mysterious wild west where white Christian culture and Native American mystic, spiritual practices are mixing and exploding.

Terribly underrated and hated with no reason at all: outstanding western with incredible performances by the entire cast.

I did give this 2 stars, but I had to change it to one b/c this movie has really no redeeming qualities. I can't believe Ron Howard would do something like this. Terribly boring.

Different breed of western but I have the same feelings towards this as I do towards Open Range.
