    The Mission started out as quite a fascinating story, showing wonderous views and delving into the Native American culture. The story is one certainly worthy to tell, but have to confess that I lost interest around half way through the film.

    about some priests of the jesuit order who are left by the church (good old church) to defend a tribe of indians with weapons and faith from the portugese and spanish. bobby de niro and jeremy irons are both good in it. it's slow to start off with but once it actually gets going ...( read more)it's a powerful film

    One of the BEST movies of all time. One of my top favorites. Perfect acting. Great photography. Perfect script. Beautiful soundtrack. Beautiful and moving story based on truth. Totally fantastic. There are not enough stars here.

    I could have given this film a perfect 10, because who wouldn't? But beyond the strong script, and compelling performances, there is a promise of creating a classic that absolutely came up short. The music was beautiful, and so was the great cinematography that reminds of "Aguirr...( read more)e: The Wrath of God's" muddy terrain a lot. "The Mission" gave a promising first-half, with honest exchanges between De Niro and Irons, but the climactic siege of the tribes felt a little rushed and lacked the emotional depths it so rightfully need. But through the flaws, "The Mission" is a beautifully rendered film, especially the opening sequence of a crucified priest fighting the turbulent waves of the waters, a disturbingly beautiful early scene.

    Es muy fácil dejarse llevar por las apariencias al ver una película como The Mission, y es que este filme puede ser encasillado como un lugar común al ser una película de las llamadas "de época", una película religiosa y una tragedia; sin embargo, el valor de esta obra va ...( read more)mucho más allá del cine de género, es una película esencialmente trascendental y profunda por naturaleza, no por imposición.

    Después del incidente en el que los guaraníes que habitan la cumbre de las cataratas de Iguazú matan a un misionero, el padre Gabriel decide escalar las cataratas para llegar con los nativos y fundar una misión jesuita.
    Con el esfuerzo de los guaraníes y de los misioneros, poco a poco empieza a tomar forma la Misión de San Carlos. Y es así que los indígenas deciden dejar la selva para establecerse en la comunidad.
    Por otro lado, se nos presenta el camino que lleva a Mendoza, un mercenario y asesino, a arrepentirse de sus pecados y buscar la redención entre los jesuitas y los guaraníes.

    Sin embargo, conflictos políticos entre España, Portugal y la Iglesia católica ponen en riesgo la existencia de las misiones en Paraguay y, por ende, la libertad de los nativos; es entonces que Mendoza decide retomar la espada para luchar por la misión, mientras el padre Gabriel decide dar una última misa.

    The Mission es mucho más que una película religiosa; presenta una profunda reflexión sobre el sentido de la vida, la redención, la libertad y la providencia. A primera instancia, podemos ver en Mendoza al personaje más interesante de la cinta, un hombre sumido en la frustración que decide expiar sus culpas arrastrando con él durante el trayecto hacia la selva todo el peso de armaduras y espadas que en algún momento usó para matar, purificación que solo consigue al sentirse renacer en la cima de las cataratas de Iguazú y que lo llevan a ser un nuevo hombre. Sin embargo, al ver amenazado todo lo que había logrado construir en la misión, su vida y la de los nativos, decide darle sentido a lo que alguna vez no lo tuvo y lucha contra todo un ejército para proteger la aldea.

    También tenemos al padre Gabriel, un religioso que decide rechazar las ideas europeas que consideraban animales a los indígenas y se empeña en ayudarlos no solo a sobrevivir, sino a ser libres y a ver en el bien común una razón para trabajar. En contraste con las acciones de Mendoza, Gabriel pasa hasta el último momento en misa con los nativos y se enfrenta a las balas caminando con ellos con el santísimo en manos, es cuando cae ante las armas enemigas y el santísimo queda en manos de los guaraníes que lo toman, no como símbolo religioso, sino como la representación de su libertad, algo por lo que vale la pena la vida y la muerte.

    The Mission es una cinta enorme, con actuaciones intachables de Robert de Niro y Jeremy Irons. No desdeña del canon cinematográfico comercial de la actualidad pero lo lleva lo más lejos posible en todos los aspectos. Con locaciones hermosas muy bien fotografiadas, aunque no tanto así los planos básicos y los encuadres, y una muy buena banda sonora de Ennio Morricone, The Mission es una de las películas más subvaloradas de la década de los 80.

    This a haunting, heart-wrenching, beautiful film. I love the Jesuits. :)
