A lovely film with beautiful colors placed into the film...can a woman whom can assist with destiny for others find her true love?? ....Aishwarya Rai is beautiful and is good in this film along with Dylan McDermott.

A poor man's Chocolat. Aishwarya Rai is beautiful but that can't carry a movie. I really like Dylan McDermott but he couldn't save this cheesy, plotless romance.

Not very subtle is it? Some bits look really absurd. Still, love the details. And Aishwarya Rai's belly, of course.

WOW! This is a great movie! Tilo (Aishwarya Rai) has her gift and traditions, as mistress of spices. Living in America, she has certain rules to follow and it becomes difficult when she falls in love with an American (Dylan McDermott). Like most cultures, traditions usually doe...( read more)

Rai is gorgeous, while the rest of the cast delivers a par performance. Truly awkward final scenes, reminiscent of traditional Indian limitations on dynamic society.

I cannot say whether this was a good adaptation of the novel or not, since i have not read it, but by just judging the success of the novel one can clearly see that this "movie" wasn't at all like the novel.
The script was all over the place and the plot was quite pointless. the ...( read more) -

I usually like Aishwarya Rai in her roles but I found this one Tilo to be too meek and a typical conservative Indian woman. not that it's actually bad, just bad on her. And the nonsense script didn't help the movie either.

September 6, 2006"Yes, it's not great cinema... of great courage, making you cry... making you angry. But it is good cinema... and a faithful representation of the book. The book is a fairy-tale, simple to the core, and so is the movie." - legofrod of IMDB
and just for the record...
ruppooson: "is there any type of sexual or evena kissing scence in the movie?"
s_kamboj: "There are some aroused vegetables and mircha but thats about it." -
September 6, 2006"This is an Amazing Film in that it is about something, almost lost in this Twenty first century. In this throwaway society to be taken back to the World of Craft: In This Case This Beautiful Maiden's Love and almost Worship of Spices the way she empathises with them allows her to act as The Foodie Eqivalence of The Now regarded Noble Profession of Aromatherapist. The True Calling of The Crafts men or Craftswomen whoso immerse themselves in the nuances and resonances of their craft or calling is alas something we so rarely see today. So until We can have A Mistress of Spices in every City Town Village or Neighbourhood. This Film is the closest we can get to The Magical Shangrila of The Mistress of Spices." - scholswainnisbet of IMDB

September 6, 2006"Rai fans probably won't want to miss this, despite the movie's relatively weak and fluffy plot." - DICK STEEL of IMDB
"You'd be better off going to a good Indian restaurant rather than wasting your time and money on this film." - kane-8 of IMDB -
September 6, 2006"Plot summary: A neurotic workaholic Indian woman completely loses it but love finds her because she looks like miss-world '94." - laurenta of IMDB
"The movie's failing attribute is how slow it is to start -- but a quirky cast and hypnotic cinematography make this a movie that's easily along the lines of The Lake House or Chocolat in the realm of accessible magical realism." - twistednerves of IMDB
"Mistress of Spices has a bizarre story to tell, but it is at heart, a fairytale of sorts. It is also straight-forward, and not all that deep with emotion, yet it's beautiful to gaze upon. The numerous shot of the spices are spectacular, but this isn't enough to help Mistress of Spices raise its par to become anything exceptional." - Cruiz Dwyer of IMDB
