while i love the story, some of the music was a bit bland and i didnt believe the love story between preston and jones much. preston did almost too well playing the slimey traveling salesman to believe his redemption would come so quickly, even with the very beautiful shirley jo...( read more)nes at the root of it. over all this is a wonderful classic that is expertly acted and fun to watch.

My favorite musical, beautiful acting and strong performances. I always get the tunes stuck in my head. It's like that old saying about food - "the messier the better" - wheras for movies, the stickiest the better. xD

five stars, watched the first 20 minutes, perfection and awesome, watching the rest of the musical as I write this. No enter Shirley Jones character just now and dropped by two stars, things gettting kind of pathetic after an awesome opening.

Beautiful, perfect period piece. Cast beautifully (Meredith Wilson insisted on Robert Preston, who was a big stage star but had no previous experience in film. Very wise move, as he IS Professor Harold Hill.) Gorgeous songs and sets, fun dancing. Ye gods!
