Cyberpunk meets spy shlock pretty girl in this bizarrely bad future story where the Internet can be used to destroy a person's identity, and it's up to Sandra Bullock to save it. Well, with a name like Bullock, she has the nads to do it, but does she have the script? No. Typing on a keyboard is boring, and there's a lot of it in here. What passes fo esponage is nothing more than oohs and aahs where people's files disappear and reappear. The same thing happens every time we used Macs back in 1995. Ha! (Sometimes it happened to PCs too). Fear of the Net becomes misplaced, but it seemed timely then. It's not the Net that's uncontrolled. It's the people using it.
"Angela" (Sandra Bullock) is a computer geek. She works and plays with computers on a daily basis.
One day, she comes across a computer program that proves the recent suicide of a high ranking official (Ken Howard) in the Pentagon was actually a set up to kill him. The man who sent her the program, which acted like a computer virus, is killed in an airplane crash, and her life is turned upside down.
On vacation to Mexico, she loses everything that identifies her and quickly learns that all public accessible records on her have been changed to a new identity.
Now, she has to run from the people who are trying to killer her and get back the information she has that proves the conspiracy. Only close friends can help her, but they pay the ultimate price as she tries to regain her life.
I remember how bad the critics blasted this movie. While some of it did deserve it, I don't think it was that bad of a movie.
First, Bullock did a pretty good job as a woman who was having her life change without her consent. She also did a pretty good job as a person who was trying to solve a mystery without the assistance of people she could really trust.
I found the supporting cast hard to believe. First, we have a former lover (Dennis Miller) who delivers his lines the same way in every scripted scene he's ever done without the help of cue cards like his days on SNL. Then there was "Angela's" mother, a victim of Alzheimer's, who was used as a pawn by those chasing her. We only got to see the mother only a couple of times, but with that horrible disease it was hard for the actress to do much.
The villains were pretty pathetic. First, we have the guy who tried to gain "Angela's" heart to gain her trust. He was just not believable, especially when he tells "Angela" that he is attracted to her. Then there was the woman who takes over "Angela's" life. You would think that somebody who worked at the same place would realize that she is not who she claims to be. It was really pathetic that somebody wouldn't say something.
The special effects were pretty dated. They were nothing fancy for a big budget movie. The computer graphics looked like they were from a time earlier than when this film was released. To me, the graphics looked like something from the late 1980's.
Character development is not great, especially in the supporting cast. Some of the relationships "Angela" has is barely defined. I also found little to no chemistry between Bullock and just about every person she comes across with in this film. I felt no chemistry between Bullock and Miller at all. They were easily the worst on screen couple in this movie if you ask me.
The only thing that was done right in this movie was the mystery surrounding who stole "Angela's" life. And that's the only thing that makes the movie worth seeing when you come across it on television or on On Demand. I also liked how the people tried to get "Angela" to believe that her life was not what she knew it was.
Really cool movie. The whole thing about changing the person's life was so weird. The people said she moved out. I was thinking how is that even possible, they just changed her name and stuff. And she signed as Ruth. WTF. Awesome movie.
wow just seen this 4 the 1st time n think this is an ok movie this is nothing special but its alright i guess...the director of this Action & Adventure, Mystery & Suspense
movie had done a good job of directing this movie because you never know what 2 expect throghout this movie because the director keeps you on the edge of your seats throughout this movie...this is a good suspense movie n i think that every1 in this movie all play a good part throughout this movie..this has a good cast of characters throughout this movie n its ok 2 watch i guess
This is the first time I'd seen Bullock in anything and I think she did a great job. Conspiracy theorists should steer well clear of this flic though, you wouldn't sleep for a month. Gripping stuff.
Pretty fantastic back in the day. Now that the Internet has taken over the universe (here we are rating and listing our favorite movies) they have made many movies that share the same idea. I like this one because of Bullock.
One of my favourite movies. It reminds us how much information on our lives is out there on the net, which could be manipulated. Just Google yourself. Scary stuff.
I love Sandra Bullock & she is enjoyable, as always, here. I found it to be a bit tech-heavy & got a little bored by the stuff that went over my head & would probably would have enjoyed it more had I greater knowledge of computers.
The movie is about identity theft too, but in a major way. Sandra Bullock is a computer analyst who accidentally learns of a conspiracy by a software security outfit -- "Gatekeeper" -- run by a secret organization called the Praetoreans. It's not clear exactly what their goals are. Once installed, their security system allows a back-door entry into any data base, and presumably this will lead to their taking over the world somehow. In the meantime, when the Praetoreans learn that Bullock may know about their plan, they set about erasing her identity on line and dispatch a smooth-talking, handsome, wealthy British dude to delete her existence IRL. When the company substitutes a false on-line ID for her (involving prostitution, VD, first-degree skulking while immersed in giant tubs of cottage cheese, wanted dead or alive, and so on) and knocks off her only friend, the shrink, Dennis Miller, she runs and hitches from city to city.
This movie is why I started to become a fan of Sandra Bullock. Amazing lady.
Note to all: The internet really doesn't work like this. I say this only due to personal experience: far too many people I've ttalked with actually believe that the internet does work like it does in this horrible piece of crap movie.
computers have changed a lot in the last 12 years, and yet some things never change. computer geeks or any one who enjoys a good thriller will get a kick out of it.
Movie's OK. Keeps your interest while you figure out how Sandra Bullock will get out of the mess she finds herself in. For a movie made over ten years ago, not much has changed in computer technology.
