The Nutty Professor

Del Moore, Jerry Lewis, Kathleen Freeman, Med Flory, Stella Stevens

Jerry Lewis's 1963 Jekyll and Hyde variation has always been tagged by two popular assumptions: one is that it is his best work as a comic filmmaker, and the other is that Lewis's Mr. Hyde equivalent-...( read more  read more... )-the slick, ultra-arrogant, good-looking womanizer Buddy Love--actually lampoons the director's former partner, Dean Martin. Well, The Nutty Professor certainly is Lewis's best film. But all one has to do is watch it to realize the motivation behind Buddy Love is more confessional: he's really much more like Lewis's darker, narcissistic side, while the shlubby scientist (also played by Lewis) from whom Love springs is closer to the star's screen image. You can watch all this psychodrama yourself and have a lot of good laughs at the same time with this unusual film, which still surpasses Eddie Murphy's recent remake--though not necessarily by a wide gap. --Tom Keogh

Professor Julius Kelp (Jerry Lewis), is a nerdy, unkempt, buck-toothed, introverted, socially inept college professor who invents a serum that turns him into the extremely smooth, cool, and somewhat obnoxious girl-chasing hipster, Buddy Love. This newfound persona gives him the c...( read more)onfidence to pursue one of his students, Stella Purdy (Stella Stevens). At first she despises Love, but she finds herself strangely attracted to him.
The formula wears off at inopportune times, often to Kelp's embarrassment. He must rush back to his laboratory in the hopes that no one will discover his secret.
Although Kelp knows that his alternate persona is an arrogant person, he cannot prevent himself from continually taking the formula as he enjoys the newfound attention that Love receives.
In the end his true identity is revealed during the prom, as the Love persona transforms to Kelp during a speech. He admits that he has learned a valuable lesson, and Purdy admits that she likes Kelp better than Love and they get married.
Jerry was absolutely great and this film proved to be one of this comedian's most popular films...

Professor kelp is a sorry kind of oke. He's in love with one of his students, but he's so ugly it hurts to look at him. So he transforms himself into smooth, slightly metro Buddy, with potentially disastrous consequences.

Jerry Lewis is a fine actor, no questions asked. But the ...( read more)professor is a bit bland, and his alter ego only slightly sickening. Alright. Extremely sickening.

Generally, quite predictable. But still fun.

Jerry Lewis' take on Jekyll and Hyde.
I don't find Jerry Lewis funny. This movie plays out like it exists in a comic strip/saturday morning cartoon universe where everything is exaggerated. If you find Jerry Lewis funny, you'll probably like this. If you are a fan of exaggera...( read more)ted humor, you'll probably like this. If neither of these things amused you, you'll probably sit there bored through the entire length of this comedy.
