"All I know is, the Democrats elected a president, and the Republicans cheated 'em out of it!" No, this is not a Michael Moore documentary, but a 1968 Disney musical. The One and Only, Genuine, Origin...( read more  read more... )al Family Band is probably the best musical comedy set against the 1888 presidential campaign between Grover Cleveland and Benjamin Harrison. The family band, a bit like American prairie Von Trapps, settles in the Dakota territory. Problem is, Grandpappy Walter Brennan is a diehard Democrat, and Dakota is rife with Republicans, including the suitor (John Davidson at his dimpledest) to his granddaughter (Lesley Ann Warren). The score by the Sherman brothers is not their best, and the "family fare" approach almost killed Disney films during this era. Nice to see old hoofer Buddy Ebsen get to dance a bit, and trivia buffs should note that Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn are first linked here--he's one of the kids, she's a featured dancer. --Robert Horton

I remembered enjoying this movie when I was a kid so I was eager to see it again all these years later. I was surprised by how familiar all the songs still were so I couldn't help but wonder if they were written by the infamous Sherman brothers. It was no surprise to find out I...( read more) was correct! The theme behind the movie is a tale as old as time. People bickering about politics, families being split over the upcoming election and Democrats accusing Rebublicans of stealing the election. The love story is also very cute and I especially enjoyed the song, "'Bout Time". Whenever classic Disney films are talked about this movie is long forgotten, but I feel it is a gem worth discovering. It's a full blown musical that I would describe as a mix between The Sound Of Music, Oklahoma and The Music Man. Some of the plot points are unnecessary but easily overlooked if you are looking for a good wholesome movie the whole family can enjoy. Look for a cameo of a very young Goldie Hawn!

Look for Goldie Hawn as the Giggly Girl. It's kind of wierd/cool to see Kurt Russell and Goldie together. You definitely notice the age gap.
