I saw this on TV a while ago but the lighting and cinematography were so heavy-handed that I couldn’t sit through it, and turned off the television within the first 10 minutes.
However, I kicked myself later when I realized that:
a) the film featured Johdi May (whom I adore) and
b) wasn’t available on DVD, either in North America or the UK.
It took me years before I was able to see the film again…but it turns out I hadn’t missed much. The movie isn’t very faithful to either history or the original novel, and much of the script had been improvised
Still, the story is interesting in that, unlike most historical dramas, it suggests that Anne Boleyn was actually guilty…but only of the most unlikely charges lain against her –incest.
However, I still could not get past the look of the film.
The lighting of the out-door scenes mimic the over-exposed and highly saturated covers of Gregory’s novels, and while this is an interesting choice it gets old very quickly.
The cinematography, for some ungodly reason, was documentary-style, with lots of hand-held and moving cameras (along with several to-camera ‘confessionals’ from Mary and Anne).
It looked like a Tudor-Reality-Show on acid.
And here’s the thing: Having an ‘aware’ or 'knowing camera' is a bad idea in period films since you’re suggesting the presence of an actual camera and film crew in 16th century England. You can't really break the 4th wall in these circumstances...It just doesn't work.
Anyway, it’s an interesting take on history and worth a watch if you come across it on TV...but don’t go out of your way looking for it
