Terrible theology and the wrong director. How does directing Independence Day qualify you to direct a movie like this?

One man's fight against the British makes him an important figure in the War for American Independence. Great historical movie, and I absolutely love it! Alot of meaning, especially that don't give up just because you're forced to

Amazing production! It will make you laugh, cry, get angry, stand up and cheer. A must see for Mel Gibson, Heath Ledger and Jason Isaacs fans.

It has been awhile since I saw this movie; I seem to remember thinking that it was a good movie, but I couldn't rate it at this time.

I would give this five stars if we hadn't already seen Gibson in Braveheart. Seemed to mimic that character at times. The supporting cast, and the story are excellent and we learn things about cannonballs most of us never knew before. Great fight sequence at climax of film.

I like this movie! Mel Gibson simply kicks ass in these big movies. This was well written with an amazing cast.

An actual decent war movie that happens to have Mel Gibson in it. I don't really like him, but he did a decent job in this. The story is quite moving. Oh Heath Ledger dies in this movie. It kind of made me sad after I started thinking about it.

Why is the Patriot a blatant failure? It's simple...repetetive,melodramatic,epic,whatever you wish events are - how to pronounce it -...point-less!!!I could have justified this film if it were for at least a certain depth in all this historical "adaptation".

I'm very shocked knowing that Roland Emmerich is directed this movie... Knowing the reputation of Emmerich which is more directing for the movie with great special effects, directed this movie, just great... Maybe it's not outstanding as another Mel Gibson movie that similar to this movie, Braveheart, but it's still great... I don't know and don't really care if this movie really based on a true history of the U.S.A. but it's still great... Mel Gibson, Heath Ledger, Chris Cooper, and many other great cast in this movie about war... It's great and emotional, the war thing is very cruel and so tragic... I don't like the ending too much, but the whole movie itself were great, a nice movie from Emmerich!

Missed opportunity with some of the cast... but doesn't stop it from being a sad and thrilling movie.

Okay. Pretty standard war drama, albeit a good quality one. Decent movie overall, especially if you're an American history buff.

Roland Emmerich's lavish story of a patriot who's really a rebel, depending on what side he's on, is an okay popcorn flick.

Widower "Benjamin Martin" (Mel Gibson), a veteran of the French/Indian War, wants only one thing -- to raise his family on the family plantation. He is totally against the brewing conflict with the British, and is at odds with his eldest son "Gabriel" (Heath Ledger), who is for going to war with Britain. The rift between the two over the war spreads more when "Gabriel" joins the militia when the state representatives, one of which is his father, votes to enter the war. However, "Benjamin" was one of the 12 to vote against entering the war.

Then, after a battle just yards away from the Martin Plantation, "Benjamin," his other children and the slaves on the plantation are taking care of injured from both sides of that battle when a group of Redcoats come up to the plantation to take their wounded to get better medical help, and kills the revolutionists. And when "Gabriel," who returned to the plantation the night before seriously injured, is discovered with communications and is taken into custody. One of "Gabriel's" younger brothers tries to interfere, and is shot in the back and dies in his father's arms. "Benjamin," with his two youngest sons, go looking for the troops responsible for killing his son and torching his property.

Now, "Benjamin" has revenge in his heart and realizes that "Gabriel" was right about breaking away from the British crown.

The first thing you can't help but notice is the very accurate architecture, furnishings, weaponry and wardrobe. The producers used the Smithsonian Institute as a consultant in just about everything for accuracy. This really sets the setting of the movie quite nicely.

Another thing that stands out is the performances. I don't think one actor gave a weak performance. Even the supporting cast, many of which had characters who weren't strongly developed past their reasons for joining "Benjamin," give good performances.

Because it's set in the Revolutionary War, there are battle scenes with graphic blood. The battles are nicely shot, especially when the camera is surrounded by the action at ground level. There is tons of action going on in these battle scenes, with lots of explosions.

The special effects are mainly blood packs, pyrotechnics, sounds of explosions and it looks like there is some CGI of the ocean with boats floating in it. The special effects are very effective in many scenes.

The cinematography is done nicely, even when the scenery is rather cramped. It is pretty hard to believe that the person responsible for finding locations for the film found any place where there was no modernization, but they did.

The phenomenal John Williams put together some good music for this movie. He was able to nail the emotion of the scenes rather nicely, as usual.

The only problem with this movie is that it's over three-hours long. However, you are so focused on what is going on in the film, you basically forget how long it is.

The movie, which is rated R, is not really for young children because of the violence. Older children may like it, if they can handle the length of the film.

In my opinion, "The Patriot" would be a good first choice for rental.

Another astonishing movie. I loved it, even tho it was pretty predictable. Strong emotions, indeed.

Charlotte: You have done nothing for which you should be ashamed.
Benjamin Martin: I have done nothing. And for that I am ashamed.

Artificial and hollow in every way that Braveheart was full-blooded & genuinely involving. Confirmed my hatred of Roland Emmerich.

The Patriot is not a history lesson on the American Revolutionary War. It is a film presented by Hollywood. The Patriot is a great film. Though the story may be cliché filled, the acting, costuming and cinematography are outstanding. How can I not love a character who would prefer not to fight a grisly war, yet circumstances beyond his control give him no choice but to fight for his family and ultimately for his country?
