Love this version. However I felt like in places its was to long and I thought it was bs filler like when he is in the boat and you see the faces on the wall, and on the horse I did not know they had a fredricks back then. I did think Gerard buttler was a great fit for the phant...( read more)om just a few bum notes but his over all preformance is very moving and very passionat. I think he is better than Michael Crawford. Emmy I think she was a great fit for christine she has a beautiful voice not seen her since .

first time i saw it i didnt quite get it, but the second time i realised how beautiful this film was. really beautiful music.
  • May 28, 2009
This is a story meant for the stage. The film comes across as cheesy, long, and tedious. But the music is great, and it's somewhat watchable. P.S. Why did they hire Joel "Batman & Robin" Schumacher to direct this?
  • May 28, 2009
most perfect rendition of the musical possible, in every aspect (musicality, staging, directing, acting, etc)... how could it not be, when every variable was controllable (unlike with live performances)... retakes possible, until every aspect perfect... butler and rossum were per...( read more)fectly cast

I love the book, the musical, and now the movie. The gal who plays Christine was wonderful especially her rendition of Think of Me.

Let's be generous here - musicals in the round tend to be brain-numbingly tedious, and Andrew Lloyd-Webber's output generally follows this tradition perfectly. But he seems to have slipped up here, big style, because not only is Phantom of the Opera halfway decent, it's also qui...( read more)te entertaining, if you like that sort of thing. And I do, because, you see, Opera is, well, opera - or as close to it as the en-nobled ugly-stick victim gets. Okay, those who have studied this sort of thing may mock - but then art should never be tied to form, because form becomes formula which then kills art stone dead. And whilst the Phantom is supposedly possessed of musical genius, it does not translate too well into Gerard Butler's limited vocal range. The two American lead actors for Christine and Le Comte do not ring true - the person who cast these two should be taken to one side and preferrably left there. Added to which, the sub-amdram spaghetti-western style lip-synching on many of the songs means this film falls far short of its potential. Then again, is it possible to make a silk purse out of a dog's breakfast?

A great musical spectacular of a scale not seen since the fantastic Chicago a year ago.

If you only know the main Phantom theme tune, you will quickly learn to love the other beautiful tunes throughout this film.

I had never seen the stage show, nor knew the story before se...( read more)eing this film, so everything that happened was a surprise including the wonderful ending.

Take a tissue or two with you as it's sad...I won't say any more about that.

The ONLY thing that slightly annoyed me during the film was that the solo musical numbers were not perfectly in sync to the person singing it and it spoilt the illusion that the person was actually singing it and not just miming.

Nevertheless, one of the best films of the entire year, and I've seen a lot of films! An easy 8/10 vote for me.

A disfigured musical genius, hidden away in the Paris Opera House, terrorizes the opera company for the unwitting benefit of a young protégée whom he trains and loves.
