Not what I expected from the two leads. Depressed me a little but it was okay.

The opening is a little excruciating, but it gets better toward the end.

For some reason Gene Kelly decided to wear Pirate Hotpants during a dance sequence. How did anyone on the set keep a straight face?

Gene Kelly wears pirate hot pants in the ballet number in the middle of the movie. (Which is a terrific modern ballet piece that Kelly would perfect in later movies). One star for that.

Judy Garland throws junk at Gene Kelly and Kelly's reactions to it really is a terrific numbe...( read more)r of physical comedy. One star for that.

Be a Clown is a really fun Porter number. Half a star for that.

The last star? Just the overall bizarre and complete technicolor feast this movie is. Yes, it's overly staged, yes it's plainly a backlot at MGM but really, isn't that what makes these kind of musicals so much fun? It's so silly, over-the-top and fun that you'll have a hard time hating this movie. Especially if, like me, you're a big Gene Kelly fan.

like a typical MGM musical, it's a pretty predictable and formulaic story, but a few surprises manage to sneak through. Garland--whom I will always find a bit detestable--is definitely in one of her more likable and legitimately comedic roles. Kelly also gets in touch with his ...( read more)more comedic side, particularly in the scene at the mansion where he's being assaulted with thrown objects--funniest scene in the movie. nothing particularly wowing about the music, even if it is Cole Porter. the pirate fantasy sequence and the Be a Clown dance(s), though, were especially fantastic...great choreography, colors, costumes, and effects. overall an above-average film.

Ultimate Garland, Kelly, Porter, Minnelli, Technicolor, MGM.

Best part of the movie is seeing Garland beat Kelly up in one of the best physical comedy scenes in a musical.

entertaining because it's gene kelly and judy garland, but it's not the best movie for either of them.
