Aaron Eckhart, Benicio Del Toro, Costas Mandylor

Jack Nicholson is detective Jerry Black, a respected and well-liked veteran of the Reno police force retiring to a life of angling with more than a little apprehension. Thus he jumps into a murder cas...( read more  read more... )e, the slaying of a little girl, a mere six hours from retirement and makes a promise to the grieving mother to catch the killer. As his partner (an effectively abrasive Aaron Eckhart) squeezes a confession out of the severely mentally handicapped suspect (a thoroughly unsettling performance by Benicio Del Toro), Jerry is convinced that they've got the wrong man.

As in Sean Penn's previous work, this is an actors' piece. Nicholson plays Jerry with restlessness under his easy-going, smiling calm; his patient fisherman's heart leaps at every nibble while he casts for a murder suspect. And Del Toro, Helen Mirren, Vanessa Redgrave, and Mickey Rourke make striking impressions in their single-scene appearances. Penn is less concerned with the mystery than the emotional turmoil and Jerry's state of mind, interrupting moments of calm with jagged cuts and discomforting images (including some especially disturbing crime scene photos). Jerry's instincts and methods are sound and his sensitivity is real--he takes in a battered single mom (Robin Wright Penn) and her little girl, and develops a rewarding family life--but his passion for justice turns to unhealthy, destructive obsession. That's ultimately what we're left with at the conclusion of this often off-putting but ultimately fascinating film. The truth will not always set you free. --Sean Axmaker

Nicholson is great and Penn proves that he's not just a good actor! Brilliant!

I think we've all been at a place where our best intentions went horribly sideways. That's what this film says to me and I applaud it's ability to put us there.

Nice little thriller, Nicholson is actually a much better actor when he plays more restrained characters.

A much better film than I'd thought first time around, the haunting music throughout sets the atmospheric mood with a subject that is not easy to tackle.

VERDICT: A definite watch if it comes on tv.

Ending wasn't what I really wanted but it was an alright movie all in all. Watching an ex cop chase a criminal after retirement into the depths of insanity is interesting in and of itself. Benicio Del Toro was good but not in the movie long enough for me. If you like crime dra...( read more)ma flicks this might be worth a cheap rental on the weekend.

Eerie and suspenseful. Jack Nicholson goes down a path of duty into obsession. It's very original and unconventional, which was refreshing. Great early performance from Aaron Eckhart and Benicio Del Toro at his creepiest.

What a cast , super. S.Penn is too optimistic. I liked it. I am not so sure there is this kind of cop in the world. I liked again. Let us say Sean Penn comment.

I was frustrated and dissapointed. It isn't a terrible movie, but considering the talent of the cast and director, and the setup of the story that promised greatness and never delivered any kind of closure, I took that frustration out on the grade. I have no problem at all with s...( read more)lowmoving, undramatic, relationship-centered and characterdriven thrillers, in fact these are usually good things, but this time nothing worked for me. Maybe I just didn't get what it was about, maybe his growing insanity was the point and the murderstory just a means to an end, but I came in excpecting a murderstory, the insanity parts just felt wierd. I think that might be the problem, but if that's the case then the whole thing was just messy. A more attentive viewer might have spotted this earlier, and made that level work, but since the suface level doesn't the movie still has a problem that there is just no getting around.

Good moments in the movie, good acting, but overall, the movie did not do much for me.
  • October 11, 2009
The shaky plot and cliches inherent to it are compensated for by some of the best acting you will ever see, and Penn's skill as a director therein. Well worth it.
