1980's Saturday evenings sat in front of the telly with my Gran and my dog watching the ITV matinee movie. Fond memories! Would be closely followed by Blockbusters and The A-Team! Perfect.

without the excellent special effects of the modern version but more than making up for it with a highly claustrophobic atmosphere, ernest borgnine and gene hackman are apt lead while the screaming totty is also apt support in this must've been great for its time disaster reel

i love that they tried to make a preacher the hero, but when that preacher is an arrogant man with bad theology it doesnt work. as the hero, hackman's character was not likeable at all, and i never found myself caring much for any of the characters in the film. decent effects f...( read more)or 72', but overrated as a film.

great about dealing with tragedies amidst fun times... this version was better than the recent one... Shelley Winters was fantastic holding her breath - I appreciate this as a fellow swimmer...

Movie truly drives home how skinny fat people can be underwater. So skinny that they have a heart attack later.

Before there was James Cameron's Titanic, this sea-themed tradgedic tale told thru cinematic fare was the king of the movie-world.
