This particular movie isn't a prequel, it's a sequel. It takes place 400 years after the first one. King Jen and Queen Kira rule over the peaceful land above ground (you can see them in the pictures above, and they're aged). They rule over a new generation of gelflings that have been replenished to the land. The girl made of fire lives below the surface and needs a piece of the crystal to save her people's sun from dying.
I'm curious to see this movie. I adored the first and watched it so many times as a child that I'm sure I still know every line by heart. I read the book "The World of the Dark Crystal" just a few years ago, which explained how the urSkeks came to the land, how they split into the Skesis and Mystics, and how Aughra came into being, and the meanings behind all of the symbols you see in the movie, and it was a wonderful read. I really can't wait to see this come out.
